🐢 Sumela Monastery: A Challenge to the Laws of Physics

The Sumela Monastery, perched on a steep cliff at an altitude of about 1,200 meters, is more than just a spiritual site — it is a true masterpiece of engineering.

Vertical logistics
The builders had to transport materials and supplies up an almost vertical rock face, which in itself was an enormous technical challenge.

Anchored in the rock
The complex is not merely attached to the cliff — it is embedded within it. Natural cavities in the rock were used and reinforced with massive masonry terraces to ensure stability.

Hydraulic engineering
To secure access to water, a system of aqueducts carved into the rock was created. These channels collected water from higher-altitude springs and transported it directly into the monastery’s reservoirs.
