Malcolm A. Smith, in his still standard work, "The Fauna of British India, Ceylon and Burma, including the whole of the Indo-Chinese Sub-region. Reptilia and Amphibia. Vol. III.—Serpentes", recorded maximum lengths for Ptyas mucosa (then referred to as Ptyas mucosus) of between 3 to 3.65 meters ( approximately 10 - 12 feet ).

It is from this reference that all modern descriptions derive.

Field surveys in Maharashtra / Punjab have documented large specimens above average length, > 2.5 metres.

Big ones are not seen as frequently as they used to be.
