UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg visits Riyadh

Amman, 15 September 2021 - The Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Yemen Hans Grundberg has arrived today in Riyadh where he is scheduled to meet with senior Yemeni and Saudi officials and diplomats.
This is the first visit of Mr. Grundberg since he took office as UN Special Envoy on 5 September 2021. He is keen to engage with Yemenis and other key interlocutors on how to find durable solutions to the conflict and reach an inclusive political settlement that ends the war and meets the aspirations of the Yemeni people.

يزور المبعوث الخاص للأمين العام للأمم المتحدة إلى اليمن هانس غروندبرغ الرياض اليوم 15 سبتمبر حيث يلتقي مع كبار المسؤولين والدبلوماسيين اليمنيين والسعوديين.
هذه هي الزيارة الأولى للسيد غروندبرغ منذ أن تولى منصبه كمبعوث خاص للأمم المتحدة في 5 أيلول/سبتمبر 2021. إنه حريص على التواصل مع اليمنيين والمعنيين الرئيسيين الآخرين حول كيفية إيجاد حلول دائمة للنزاع والتوصّل إلى تسوية سياسية شاملة للجميع تنهي الحرب وتلبّي تطلّعات الشعب اليمني.

The UN Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg concludes visit to Riyadh

Amman, 17 September 2021 - The United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg concluded today his visit to Riyadh, where he met with President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi, Vice-President Ali Mohsen, Speaker of the Parliament Sultan al Barakani, Prime Minister Maeen Abdul Malik and Foreign Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak.

During his meeting yesterday with President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi, the UN Special Envoy underlined his intention to listen to the parties and to engage in serious, sustained discussions on the way forward towards an inclusive and comprehensive political settlement that meets the aspirations of Yemeni men and women. “I listened to the Government’s priorities and we had a constructive dialogue on the current challenges and the way forward”, Mr. Grundberg said. The Special Envoy highlighted that a serious commitment by all parties to engage in good faith is a necessary first step in making progress on the UN’s peace efforts.

Mr. Grundberg also exchanged views with representatives of political parties on ways to reinvigorate the political process. The UN Special Envoy also met with the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council Nayef Al-Hajraf, Saudi officials and the ambassadors to Yemen of the permanent members of the Security Council. In all engagements, the Special Envoy welcomed the clear engagement to actively support his mission and the willingness to work together to support a Yemeni-led political process.

المبعوث الأممي إلى اليمن هانس غروندبرغ يختتم زيارته إلى الرياض
عمّان، 17 أيلول/سبتمبر 2021 - اختتم المبعوث الأممي الخاص إلى اليمن هانس غروندبرغ اليوم زيارته إلى الرياض، حيث التقى الرئيس عبد ربه منصور هادي، ونائب الرئيس علي محسن، ورئيس مجلس النواب سلطان البركاني ورئيس مجلس الوزراء معين عبد الملك ووزير الخارجية أحمد بن مبارك.

خلال لقائه الرئيس عبد ربه منصور هادي بالأمس، أكّد المبعوث الخاص عزمه على الأصغاء إلى الأطراف والانخراط في مناقشات جادة ومستمرة حول سبل المضي قدماً نحو تسوية سياسية شاملة وتحاكي تطلّعات اليمنيين رجالاً ونساءً.
وقال السيد غروندبرغ: "لقد استمعت إلى أولويات الحكومة وأجرينا حواراً بنّاءً حول التحديات الحالية وكيفية المضي قدماً". وشدّد المبعوث الخاص على أنّ الالتزام الجاد من قبل جميع الأطراف بالانخراط بحسن نية هو خطوة أولى ضرورية لإحراز تقدّم في الجهود التي تبذلها الأمم المتحدة من أجل السلام.

كما تبادل السيد غروندبرغ وجهات النظر مع ممثلي الأحزاب السياسية حول سبل إعادة إحياء العملية السياسية. والتقى المبعوث الأممي بالأمين العام لمجلس التعاون الخليجي نايف الحجرف ومسؤولين سعوديين وسفراء الدول الدائمة العضوية في مجلس الأمن إلى اليمن. وقد رحّب المبعوث الخاص في لقاءاته بالانخراط الجليّ في دعم مهمته بشكل فعّال والاستعداد الذي أبداه الجميع للعمل معاً لدعم عملية سياسية بقيادة يمنية.

Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on the recent executions in Yemen

The Secretary-General deeply regrets that the Houthi movement (who also call themselves Ansar Allah) yesterday carried out executions of nine individuals, one of whom was reportedly a minor at time of detention, and strongly condemns these actions which are a result of judicial proceedings that do not appear to have fulfilled the requirements of fair trial and due process under international law.
Stressing that he opposes the use of the death penalty in all circumstances, the Secretary-General reiterates that international law sets stringent conditions for the application of the death penalty, including compliance with fair trial and due process standards as stipulated under international law. He urgently calls on all parties and authorities to adopt a moratorium on the carrying out of the death penalty.
The Secretary-General is also concerned about a reported airstrike by the Saudi-led Coalition in Shabwa that allegedly killed at least six civilians from the same family. He reiterates that directing attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure is prohibited by international humanitarian law.
The Secretary-General urges all actors to cease the violence, and he encourages the Yemeni parties to engage with the UN in good faith and without preconditions to reinvigorate political dialogue to find a peaceful negotiated settlement to the conflict that meets the legitimate demands and aspirations of the Yemeni people.

بيان منسوب إلى الناطق باسم الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة حول عملية الإعدام الأخيرة في اليمن

يعرب الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة عن أسفه الشديد لأن حركة الحوثيين (التي تطلق على نفسها أيضاً اسم أنصار الله) نفّذت بالأمس عملية إعدام بحقّ تسعة أشخاص، بمن فيهم شخص تشير المعلومات إلى أنّه كان قاصراً عند اعتقاله، ويدين بشدّة هذه الأعمال التي نتجت عن إجراءات قضائية لم تحترم على ما يبدو متطلبات المحاكمة العادلة والإجراءات المنصوص عليها في القانون الدولي.
وفيما يشدّد الأمين العام على أنه يعارض عقوبة الإعدام في جميع الظروف، فإنه يعيد التأكيد من جديد أنّ القانون الدولي يضع شروطاً صارمة للغاية لتطبيق عقوبة الإعدام، بما في ذلك الامتثال لمعايير المحاكمة العادلة والإجراءات القانونية الواجبة كما نصّ عليها القانون الدولي. ويدعو بشكل عاجل جميع الأطراف والسلطات إلى اتخاذ قرار بوقف تنفيذ عقوبة الإعدام.
كما يعرب الأمين العام عن قلقه إزاء الأنباء عن غارة جوّية شنّها مؤخراً التحالف بقيادة السعودية في شبوة والتي قتلت ستة مدنيين على الأقل من عائلة واحدة بحسب الأنباء. ويكرّر أنّ استهداف المدنيين والبنية التحتية المدنية محظور بموجب القانون الإنساني الدولي.
ويحثّ الأمين العام جميع الأطراف اليمنية على الانخراط مع الأمم المتحدة بحسن نية ومن دون شروط مسبقة من أجل إعادة إحياء الحوار السياسي للتوصّل إلى تسوية سلمية للنزاع عن طريق التفاوض تلبي المطالب والطموحات المشروعة للشعب اليمني.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concludes a visit to Muscat

Amman, 21 September 2021 - The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded today a visit to Muscat, Oman where he met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman, Badr Albusaidi and other senior Omani officials. He also met with Ansar Allah’s chief negotiator, Mohammed Abdel Salam.
Mr. Grundberg exchanged views with Foreign Minister Albusaidi on the prospects of peace in Yemen and thanked the Sultanate for their steadfast support to the United Nations’ efforts.
“Oman continues to play an active and important role for peace in Yemen. Therefore, the conversations were particularly fruitful,” Mr. Grundberg said.
During his discussion with Mr. Abdel Salam, Mr. Grundberg reiterated his commitment to work with the parties to move towards a comprehensive political settlement to the conflict in Yemen.
“Sustainable peace can only be achieved through a peacefully negotiated settlement. It is imperative that all efforts are directed towards revitalizing a political process that can produce lasting solutions that meet the aspirations of Yemeni women and men”, Mr. Grundberg noted.

عمّان - 21 أيلول/سبتمبر 2021 - اختتم المبعوث الأممي الخاص إلى اليمن، هانس غروندبرغ، زيارة إلى مسقط حيث التقى وزير خارجية سلطنة عُمان، بدر البوسعيدي، وعدد من كبار المسؤولين في السلطنة. كما التقى محمد عبد السلام، كبير مفاوضي أنصار الله.

تبادل السيد غروندبرغ وجهات النظر مع السيد البوسعيدي حول آفاق السلام في اليمن، وشكر السلطنة على دعمها المستمر لجهود الأمم المتحدة.
وقال السيد غروندبرغ: "تستمر سلطنة عمان في لعب دور فعال ومهم فيما يتعلق بالسلام في اليمن، ولذا كانت تلك المناقشات مثمرة بشكل خاص."

وخلال نقاشه مع السيد عبد السلام، أعاد السيد غروندبرغ تأكيده على التزامه بالعمل مع الأطراف سعيًا نحو تسوية سياسية شاملة للنزاع في اليمن.
وقال السيد غروندبرغ: "لا يمكن تحقيق السلام المستدام إلا عن طريق تسوية يتم التوصل إليها عن طريق التفاوض السلمي. يجب توجيه كل الجهود نحو إحياء عملية سياسية تسفر عن حلول تلبّي تطلّعات اليمنيين رجالاً ونساءً."

تعقد المجموعة النسوية اليمنية الاستشارية المُختصّة اجتماعاً هذا الأسبوع في عمّان وقد التقت بالأمس المبعوث الخاص للأمم المتحدة إلى اليمن هانس غروندبرغ الذي قال: "أرحّب بالأعضاء الجدد في هذه المجموعة التي تعكس التنوّع الذي يتطلبه مستقبل #اليمن. إنّ التزامكنّ بالسلام هو مصدر إلهام."

UN Special Envoy Grundberg exchanged views with Yemeni youth yesterday at the European Union event on “Strengthening the Role of Youth in Yemen’s Peace Process”: "The future of any country lies with the youth. In #Yemen, with a predominantly young population, it is paramount to involve the new generation in building a sustainable peace."

Grundberg: "Yemeni youth must be at the forefront in breaking the cycles of violence, polarization and violations of freedoms. You can rely on the United Nations to support you in those efforts."
