The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded a visit to Washington DC on, Friday, where he met senior American officials to discuss developments in Yemen and explore ways to support an inclusive political process to resolve the conflict.

During his visit, he met with the Acting Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, John Bass, the Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, Michele Sison, the Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Barbara Leaf, National Security Council Coordinator for Middle East and North Africa, Brett McGurk, and the US Special Envoy for Yemen, Tim Lenderking.

In his meetings, Grundberg outlined the challenges that continue to impede mediation in Yemen, including regional developments and a worrying trajectory of escalation in Yemen since the beginning of the year. Grundberg stressed the need to prioritize the agenda of peace, dialogue, and de-escalation in Yemen. He also emphasized the importance of concerted regional and international support in realizing this objective.

Advancing inclusive peace in Yemen through a bottom-up approach
 
As part of the efforts to foster a sustainable peace process in Yemen, the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (OSESGY) and UN Women Yemen recently held their fourth consultation meeting in Mukalla with 70 representatives of diverse segments of the Yemeni society.
 
The meeting in Mukalla is part of a broader effort to develop a “Bottom-Up vision for inclusive peace” in Yemen in a series of consultations co-organized by OSESGY and UN Women to elevate local Yemeni voices and foster trust in the United Nations in preparation for an inclusive peace process.
 
The fourth consultative meeting brought together participants from, Mukalla, Seiyun, Al-Mahra, and Socotra and included government officials, members of women-led civil society organizations, academics, and representatives of political parties
Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on key priorities, including economic and security measures, humanitarian needs, and de-escalation strategies.
 
The key highlight was a discussion on women’s role in political and economic dialogues. The participants demonstrated consensus around the importance of women’s full and meaningful participation to ensure the sustainability of peaceful solutions. Participants focused specifically on ways to enhance accountability and transparency in the implementation of agreements, ensuring that the peace process is credible and inclusive.
 
During their visit to Mukalla, the UN delegation from OSESGY and UN Women also engaged with local stakeholders, including the Governor of Hadramout, local council members, the Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, and other key political and economic figures.
 
OSESGY delegation concluded the mission by visiting Aden and held productive meetings with key figures, including the Minister of Human Rights and Legal Affairs, the Minister of Social Affairs, The National Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights Violations, the Southern Transitional Council, the Women's Union-Aden, and various women's groups including the Mothers of Abductees and victims of the conflict.
These interactive discussions delved into identifying short- and long-term priorities, promoting the involvement of women in decision-making processes, and devising de-escalation strategies to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.

UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg held discussions with the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen
Mohammed Al Jabirn in Riyadh focused on de-escalation efforts in Yemen amid regional tensions.

Grundberg also met with the P5 members of the UN Security Council. He underscored the critical need for a unified approach to support efforts toward a political process and a ceasefire in Yemen. He also emphasized the importance of sustained advocacy for the release of detained UN personnel.

In his latest briefing to the UN Security Council, UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg reiterated the calls of the Secretary-General and the High Commissioner for Human Rights for Ansar Allah to immediately and unconditionally release all those detained, including UN personnel, members of civil society, staff of diplomatic missions, private sector employees, and individuals from minority religious communities. He emphasized the impact of these detentions on humanitarian efforts and the shrinking civic space in Yemen. Grundberg also raised concerns about the broader regional escalation, noting how it complicates his mediation efforts.
He further warned of the potentially catastrophic consequences of Ansar Allah’s recent attack on the M.V. Sounion oil tanker, urging immediate action to prevent an environmental disaster.
In addition to addressing these urgent concerns, Special Envoy Grundberg provided an update on his recent engagements with key interlocutors in Aden, Taiz, al-Dhale', Muscat, Riyadh, Cairo, and London, focused on various areas, including the economic matters and conflict-related detainee releases. " We have also had constructive discussions on the release of conflict-related detainees—a vital issue that remains a top priority. While I commend the parties for their constructive engagement in recent discussions, I must stress that positive signals alone are insufficient. We expect that priority be given to the Yemeni people and that positive signals be followed by concrete actions that contribute to de-escalation and the advancement of peace," he stressed. The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded a visit to the United Kingdom yesterday, where he held high-level meetings with senior officials. Grundberg engaged in discussions with Hamish Falconer MP, Permanent Under-Secretary of State for the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan and Anneliese Dodds, Minister for Development at the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office. The meetings focused on strengthening international efforts to support Yemen's path toward stability, ensuring a coordinated approach to overcoming current challenges, and advancing lasting solutions.

During the meetings, the Special Envoy highlighted economic challenges, rising tensions in the Red Sea, and broader regional dynamics, underscoring the impact on Yemen's peace process.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, visited Tehran, where he held discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior Iranian officials and diplomats. Mr. Grundberg congratulated Minister Araghchi on his new role and expressed his aspirations for further regional collaboration to support efforts towards a peaceful end to the conflict in Yemen.
