🗣Open-Source AI Platforms Get First Dibs on New Systems
Tech companies aren't sharing billion-dollar language systems out of kindness. While open-source licenses grant third-party users the freedom to modify and sell systems, they have limitations.
Distributors often create conditions that ensure they retain some authority. You'll find these rules in open-source programs' licensing agreements—end users rarely get 100 percent authority.
Let's say Meta wants control over LLaMA-powered products. Its legal team could specify that Meta reserves the right to invest in any new systems built on its language model.
👀But don't misunderstand—third-party developers and distributors still form mutually beneficial agreements. The latter provides billion-dollar technologies and systems. Meanwhile, startups and independent developers explore ways of implementing them into different applications.

❤️Robin AI is implemented as a Docker container, which makes it relatively simple to deploy. It’s designed to work with GitHub’s GitHub Action tool. The tool enables developers to run automated software workflows that interact with their code repositories in various ways, such as by highlighting optimization opportunities.
🗣Integral, a venture-backed data management startup, today debuted an open-source tool that can analyze software teams’ code and automatically highlight areas for improvement.
The tool is known as Robin AI. It uses artificial intelligence to scan code files for potential issues.
🦾Integral, officially Promeed Inc., launched in 2022 and earlier this year raised a funding round of undisclosed value. It’s backed by several institutional investors including LiveRamp Holdings Inc., a publicly traded provider of data management software.
👩🏻🚒Integral provides a platform that helps healthcare organizations ensure their data analytics initiatives comply with regulations. The startup built Robin AI, the open-source tool it debuted today, to make its software engineers more productive. Integral claims the tool has helped reduce the number of bugs that its developers must fix manually.

Working with scientists at Avenda Health, the team used biopsy data from multiple institutions to train the AI model, called Unfold-AI, to define margins during focal therapy. Testing was then conducted in an independent dataset of 50 patients who had radical prostatectomy for intermediate-risk cancer at the Stanford University School of Medicine. The team found the AI model was more accurate and effective at predicting tumor margins than conventional methods.

🤓A new study shows that an artificial intelligence (AI) model co-developed by researchers in the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and department of Urology at UCLA can help doctors determine the extent of cancer within the prostate.
👽In a series of tests, the AI model was found to be more accurate at predicting tumor margins than magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), potentially improving the effectiveness of focal therapy, standardizing treatment margin definition, and reducing the chance of cancer recurrence.

🗣What's happening: Part AI sandbox and part tutoring service, the center will connect AWS AI strategists, data scientists, and engineers with customers.
The goal is getting AWS customers "going in the right direction," per Elaprolu, so they go on to build and deploy their own custom generative AI products and services.
Customers are encouraged to first clean up their data and then brainstorm and build prototypes with AWS.
🗣What they’re saying: AWS expects use cases to focus on improving customer experiences, optimizing business operations, and ramping up creative production.
“Most enterprises will want to try it out internally first, to get experience and confidence,” Elaprolu said.
“Cloud computing is critical because you're training on internet-scale data: you're not going to effectively do it in a data center or a server farm," he said.

In an onstage interview at the summit, Sam Altman, the chief executive officer of ChatGPT creator OpenAI, somehow simultaneously hailed AI as the key to ending world poverty and the potential end of the human race.
Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque pulled back the curtain on the new AI model powering the Stable Diffusion image generator that makes more realistic pictures — while acknowledging concerns over the proliferation of more convincing deep fakes.
Qualcomm Inc. CEO Cristiano Amon announced that his company has been working on high-performance chips that would soon unleash the prowess of AI upon smartphones.

👽On Tuesday, he solicited feedback.
“We have had the initial training of GPT-4 done for quite awhile, but it’s taken us a long time and a lot of work to feel ready to release it,” Altman said on Twitter. “We hope you enjoy it and we really appreciate feedback on its shortcomings.”
Sarah Myers West, the managing director of the AI Now Institute, a nonprofit group that studies the effects of AI on society, said releasing such systems to the public without oversight “is essentially experimenting in the wild.”
🗣“We have clear evidence that generative AI systems routinely produce error-prone, derogatory and discriminatory results," she said in a text message. "We can’t just rely on company claims that they’ll find technical fixes for these complex problems.”

🙈The new technology is not available for free, at least so far. OpenAI said people could try GPT-4 out on its subscription service, ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20 a month.
OpenAI and its ChatGPT chatbot have shaken up the tech world and alerted many people outside the industry to the possibilities of AI software, in part through the company's partnership with Microsoft and its search engine, Bing.
🧠But the pace of OpenAI’s releases has also caused concern, because the technology is untested, forcing abrupt changes in fields from education to the arts. The rapid public development of ChatGPT and other generative AI programs has prompted some ethicists and industry leaders to call for guardrails on the technology.

OpenAI, the San Francisco tech company that grabbed worldwide attention when it released ChatGPT, said Tuesday it was introducing a new version of its artificial intelligence software.
🦾In a demonstration video, Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president, showed how the technology could be trained to quickly answer tax-related questions, such as calculating a married couple’s standard deduction and total tax liability.
“This model is so good at mental math,” he said. “It has these broad capabilities that are so flexible.”
🥹“GPT-4 is a large multimodal model (accepting image and text inputs, emitting text outputs) that, while less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks,” OpenAI wrote on its website.

🚨🗣Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 is a multimodal large language model created by OpenAI, and the fourth in its numbered "GPT-n" series of GPT foundation models. It was released on March 14, 2023, and has been made publicly available in a limited form via the chatbot product ChatGPT Plus, and with access to the GPT-4 based version of OpenAI's API being provided via a waitlist.
