๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Leila Khaled: Icon of Palestinian Liberation

Leila came to public attention for her role in the TWA Flight 840 hijacking in 1969 and one of the four simultaneous #DawsonField hijackings the following year as part of the campaign of #BlackSeptember in #Jordan. The first woman to hijack an airplane, she was later released in a prisoner exchange for civilian hostages kidnapped by other PFLP members

On August 29, 1969, Leila was part of a team that hijacked #TWAFlight840 on its way from Rome to Tel Aviv, diverting the Boeing 707 to Damascus

No one was injured, but after the passengers disembarked, the hijackers blew up the nose section of the aircraft. After this hijacking, and a photograph of her holding an AK-47 rifle and wearing a #kaffiyeh

she underwent six plastic surgery operations on her nose and chin to conceal her identity and allow her to take part in a future hijacking, and because she did not want to wear the face of an #icon.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ My People Shall Live: The Autobiography of a Revolutionary by Leila Khaled
Publication date 1971
ู„ูŠู„ู‰ ุฎุงู„ุฏ,

Leila Khaled's autobiography was published when she was only 29, which is an unusually young age for someone documenting their lifeโ€™s achievements.

But by then Khaled, who gained notoriety as a plane hijacker and icon of Palestinian #resistance, had already experienced more than most people manage during a lifetime.

My People Shall Live details Khaledโ€™s early years with her family as they fled the catastrophe that engulfed the Palestinians after the creation of Israel.

She then lived as a refugee in Lebanon and Kuwait, joined the left-wing Arab Nationalist Movement in Beirut at 15, and later became part of the Marxist-Leninist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestinians (#PFLP).

More than anything, My People Shall Live depicts the events, tragedies, and injustices that create a "terrorist" in the eyes of the Israeli government and its allies.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine

In the wake of the 1967 Six Day War and the occupation of the West Bank by Israel, Palestinian Christian George Habash, established the PFLP, a resistance movement that combined Arab nationalism with Marxist-Leninist ideology.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the group gained notoriety for a series of armed attacks and plane #highjacks, most notably with the capture of an Air France plane in 1967. Among the most prominent members of the group is Leila Khaled, who became an iconic symbol for Palestinian resistance and female power after she highjacked a plane headed from Rome to Athens in 1969.

In the 1970s, after #Fatah โ€“ the leading secular Palestinian political party founded in 1959 by #YasserArafat and others, the #PFLP has consistently been the second-largest of the groups forming the #PLO, the umbrella organisation of the Palestinian national movement.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Tell Your Tale, Little Bird (2007) | Palestine Film Institute - Documentary, 1h 30m

Seven militant women (#fedaiyat) of the revolutionary generation tell the story of the Palestinian resistance through accounts of their own lives.

Cut from 35 hours of interviews with leaders of the armed struggle, the film presents an image of confident, unapologetic and proud feminine identity.Together, the memories of these women narrate the dream of a generation, yet unrealized.

Tell Your Tale, Little Bird is a testament to the power of remembrance, positioning memory as an essential element of feminist struggle. The film reminds us that this oral tradition may carry recollection of past resistance, but it is in the very practice of retelling womenโ€™s stories that the political act has persisted.
