Microsoft sacks journalists to replace them with robots

Users of the homepages of the MSN website and Edge browser will now see news stories generated by AI

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/may/30/microsoft-sacks-journalists-to-replace-them-with-robots

Dozens of journalists have been sacked after Microsoft decided to replace them with artificial intelligence software.

Staff who maintain the news homepages on Microsoft’s MSN website and its Edge browser – used by millions of Britons every day – have been told that they will be no longer be required because robots can now do their jobs.

Around 27 individuals employed by PA Media – formerly the Press Association – were told on Thursday that they would lose their jobs in a month’s time after Microsoft decided to stop employing humans to select, edit and curate news articles on its homepages.

Publishers attack Google for refusing to pay for news

Alphabet Inc.’s Google has used its dominance to strong-arm news organizations into giving up their content without adequate compensation, a trade group for publishers said in a report to the Justice Department, which is investigating the internet giant for potential antitrust violations.

Google relies heavily on news content to draw traffic and fuel its advertising business, yet it has so much power as an online platform that news organizations can’t realistically negotiate content licenses with the company, the News Media Alliance said in the paper made public Thursday. That’s unlike Facebook Inc. and Apple Inc., which pay publishers.

“There remains little bargaining power with Google and, as a result, news publishers must consent to these practically unlimited uses by Google without compensation,” said Danielle Coffey, the general counsel for the News Media Alliance, in a statement.

Fake news on Covid-19 government initatives boost phishing in Brazil

About one in eight Internet users have accessed a website with malicious content during the first months of the pandemic, research suggests.

The spread of fake news relating to government initiatives around Covid-19 placed Brazil on a list of countries most affected by phishing attacks, according to new research on spam and phishing published by security firm Kaspersky.

According to the report, about one in eight Internet users in Brazil (12.9%) accessed, between April and June 2020, at least one link that led to websites with malicious content. This is well above the global average, of 8,26% within the same period of time.

News publishers push back against Apple over app store terms

(Reuters) - Major news publishers are seeking more favorable terms from Apple Inc (AAPL.O) on commissions the iPhone maker collects from them on payments made through its app store, according to a letter posted by a trade body on Thursday.

Digital Content Next (DCN), which represents New York Times Co (NYT.N), the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and other publishers, posted the letter, addressed to Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook, on its website.

Apple, which usually takes a cut that ranges between 15% and 30% from news publishers for first-time subscriptions made through apps on the store, has a reduced rate for Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O).

Facebook’s push to fix its fake news problem isn’t working in Africa either

Just over a year ago, Facebook announced it would add fake news checks on local language content in a bid to boost trust and reliability among African users. It came along with other measures, including shutting down suspected networks of fake accounts targeting African elections with misinformation.

But recent data suggests those moves have not yet paid off among one of Facebook’s most coveted demographics: young Africans.

More than half of young Africans do not regard Facebook as a trustworthy source of news, claims a poll by the African Youth Survey, which was commissioned by the Ichikowitz Family Foundation and conducted by global polling firm, PSB Research. WhatsApp, the messaging app owned by Facebook, which is the dominant social media platform in Africa, is also deemed untrustworthy by half of the survey’s respondents. In contrast, only about a fifth of respondents had similar misgivings about Google as a source of news.

Google and French publishers fail to reach deal on fees for news content

Some press publishers complained to the competition authority that the US tech giant is not negotiating ‘in good faith.’

Google and French publishers failed in late August to reach an agreement on how the search giant should pay to display news content, missing a deadline set by the country's competition authority.

The deadlock is set to further delay a deal on payments for online content, more than a year after France became the first EU country to apply a law that requires platforms like Google and Facebook to strike licensing deals with owners of press content.

Why Google and Facebook are being asked to pay for the news they use – explainer

The digital platforms aren’t happy and have warned of dire consequences if the draft legislation is passed into law

The Australian government has released draft legislation to compel Google and Facebook to negotiate with Australian media companies. The digital platforms have responded aggressively, warning users of dire consequences and, in the case of Facebook, threatening to remove news from Australian Facebook pages. Here’s what the fight is about.

Why does the Australian government think Google and Facebook should make payments to Australian media companies?

It’s all about the relative market power of the news companies and the tech giants.

News companies and the digital platforms need each other. Google and Facebook are gateways to the internet for almost every Australian, so news companies have no choice but to distribute their journalism via these platforms. That benefits publishers when the platforms send readers back to news websites.
