Thai Activists Sue Government Over Alleged Use of Pegasus Spyware – The Diplomat – June 2023

Two prominent Thai activists have launched legal action accusing Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s government of using Pegasus spyware to infiltrate their mobile devices during a campaign of anti-government demonstrations in late 2020 and early 2021.

According to The Associated Press, human rights lawyer Arnon Nampa and legal reform advocate Yingcheep Atchanont filed a lawsuit yesterday accusing nine state agencies of unlawfully violating their privacy by using the spyware app, which is produced by the Israeli cybersecurity company NSO Group. Among those are the Office of the Prime Minister, the Royal Thai Police, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, and the three branches of the armed forces.

Israel, Cybersurveillance, and the Case of the Ayotzinapa 43 | NACLA – June 2023

Tomás Zerón de Lucio, a key figure in the forced disappearance and subsequent government cover-up of the Ayotzinapa case, is hiding out in Tel Aviv thanks to his close ties to the Israeli cybersurveillance industry.

This month marks eight years since 43 students of the Ayotzinapa teachers’ college were forcibly disappeared from the town of Iguala in Mexico’s Guerrero state. On September 26, however, survivors, families of the disappeared, and the Mexican people at large will face a significantly different anniversary than those of previous years. Last month, the Truth Commission convened by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador published a report finding that the enforced disappearance of the 43 students on the night of September 26, 2014 constituted a “crime of state” in which all levels of the Mexican state participated.

The Hungarian Civil Liberties Union and its coordinated fight against the use of Pegasus spyware - Media Defence – June 2023

The main problem is that Hungarian national security laws permit the government and its officials to use spyware tools to monitor citizens – without any judicial oversight. Even though it has been revealed by investigative journalists that Pegasus was used against journalists, we still know very little about this use. Decision-makers are able to keep everything secret.

People who were spied on with Pegasus could not access any information about their surveillance. They also could not find out the reasons that they were targeted. Another important issue is that there are no judicial procedures to provide remedies for those who have been targeted by the spyware. Under Hungarian law it seems impossible to achieve justice.

Israel Invested in Spyware That Brought Down Greek Spymaster - Haaretz - June 2023

Two firms, one office

Haaretz has reviewed corporate documents from the Netherlands, Hungary, North Macedonia, Singapore and Israel that show that the two firms’ founders and directors were the same Israelis. Inpedio was registered in the Netherlands in 2016 by two founders: Rotem Farkash and Abraham Rubinstein. The very same Farkash and Rubinstein would establish Cytrox Holdings in Hungary - where IAI invested in - and a subsidiary, Cytrox Software, in North Macedonia, in 2017. The two registered Cytrox with their Inpedio email accounts.

Farkash is a hacker-turned-cyber-entrepreneur who later became a partner and senior official in Intellexa, an alliance of digital surveillance firms founded in Cyprus and Greece by former Israeli army intelligence commander Tal Dilian.

Who Paid for a Mysterious Spy Tool? The F.B.I., an F.B.I. Inquiry Found.
"When The New York Times reported in April that a contractor had purchased and deployed a spying tool made by NSO, the contentious Israeli hacking firm, for use by the U.S. government, White House officials said they were unaware of the contract and put the F.B.I. in charge of figuring out who might have been using the technology.
After an investigation, the F.B.I. uncovered at least part of the answer: It was the F.B.I."

Israeli Shin Bet opposes Pegasus probe, cites security concerns | Al Mayadeen English – August 2023

The Israeli internal security agency, the Shin Bet, told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the "National Security Council" that it opposed Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin's proposal to grant an investigative committee the authority to probe the Pegasus spyware, according to I24news Israeli Website.

Levin is set to propose to the government on Sunday to grant the committee the authority to look into the Pegasus spyware scandal.

The Shin Bet informed Netanyahu and the security council of its opposition to Levin's proposal for several reasons, most notably the exposure of its capabilities to the Israeli public, which may lead to secrets being exposed
