Serious cyber-attack on Austria's foreign ministry

Austria's foreign ministry has been targeted by a cyber-attack that is suspected to have been conducted by another country.

The ministry said the seriousness of the attack suggested it might have been carried out by a "state actor".

The hack started on Saturday night and experts warn it could continue for several days.

The breach occurred on the same day Austria's Green party backed forming a coalition with conservatives .

It was recognised very quickly and countermeasures taken immediately, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"Despite all intensive security measures, there is never 100% protection against cyber-attacks," the ministry said.

Raid on Amazon in Austria

The financial police seal off a warehouse to check the chauffeurs of the delivery vans. In a short time, dozens of violations are discovered.

Amazon Austria had to tolerate a raid on Tuesday in the presence of a journalist of all people. Amazon was hosting a reporter from the daily newspaper Die Presse on a tour of a distribution centre in Lower Austria when suddenly more than 60 officers of the financial police were on the mat. Their suspicion of dummy companies and illicit work was not directed directly against Amazon, but rather against its subcontractors for delivery trips.

The authorities occupied all entrances and exits of the Amazon distribution centre in Großrebersdorf and checked all chauffeurs for two hours. As reported by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, 174 employees of no less than 36 companies were treated by the authorities.

The A1 Telekom Austria Hack - they came in through the web shells

On the 3rd of February 2020 I received an encrypted email on 3 of my email addresses from a person calling themself "Libertas" with the subject "Information for the public".

"I am writing to you today because you seem to be a IT security related guy from Austria with a brain. I hope this assumption is correct, otherwise please disregard this message.

I am writing concerning your local telecom company A1 Telekom. -Libertas
"

At first I thought it's some conspiracy theorist who wants to publish something on my blog (they always do) but it was not one of these cases and I wasn't prepared to what they presented me.

Disclaimer:

After confirming the hack with A1 I was asked to postpone the publishing of this post until A1 has kicked the attackers out. I complied with their request so I wouldn't interfere with the ongoing investigation. Since I did not publish this post for months the whistleblower also contacted a journalist from Heise.de and we agreed to release our articles at the same time.

Since I have no way of checking the validity of individual statements made by the whistleblower, they could all be fabricated. I find them very plausible and many details of the email were confirmed by A1 but keep it in the back of your head that the statements of "Libertas" might be untrue or half-true until confirmed by A1 Telekom. Since I had the opportunity to talk to people from A1 I will add their statements in blue.

A Court Ruling in Austria Could Censor the Internet Worldwide

A little more than a year ago, I wrote with concern about the risk that a single EU court within single EU member state would become the censor for the world. That fear has now become reality. In a ruling Thursday, the Austrian Supreme Court ordered, pursuant to local defamation rules, that Facebook remove a post insulting a former Green Party leader, keep equivalent posts off its site, and do so on a global scale.

The case started with an April 2016 Facebook post, in which a user shared an article featuring a photo of Eva Glawischnig-Piesczek, then-chair of Austria’s Green Party, along with commentary labeling her a “lousy traitor,” “corrupt oaf,” and member of a “fascist party,” apparently in response to her immigration policies. This is core, protected speech in the United States. But it was deemed defamation under Austrian law. And in a series of rulings, Austrian courts ordered that Facebook take down and keep off any such post, and do so around the world.

Facebook complied, but only in part. Employing what is known as geoblocking, it made the particular post that had been identified inaccessible to users within Austria. But it objected both to the global reach of the order and to the obligation to look for and keep other, equivalent posts off their site. And it argued that the order violated the applicable EU’s e-Commerce Directive, which prohibits EU member states from imposing general monitoring obligations on tech companies like Facebook.

Austrian Police Conduct 15,000 Random Checks in One Day to Enforce Lockdown of Two Million Unvaccinated People

🇦🇹💉
@COVID19Up: Austria imposed a controversial lockdown on roughly 2 million unvaccinated people Monday (Nov. 15), with federal police now randomly stopping people in public places to check their COVID-19 vaccination status.

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said Tuesday that on Monday alone, at least 15,000 random police checks were carried out across #Austria and roughly "120 violations were found and punished."

Unvaccinated Austrians over the age of 12 who breach the lockdown face fines of up to 500 euros ($567), and anyone who refuses to comply with the random police checks may be fined triple that.

Austria’s third-biggest political party, the Freedom Party, called the lockdown of unvaccinated people “a corona apartheid system” and is hosting a protest in Vienna on Saturday (Nov. 20), where children older than six now must show a negative SARS-CoV-2 test result to be permitted entry into many public places.
