Walmart is teaming up with Microsoft on TikTok bid

Walmart confirmed it's teaming up with Microsoft in a bid for
TikTok.

TikTok is nearing an agreement to sell its U.S., Canadian, Australian and New Zealand operations in a deal that's likely to be in the $20 billion to $30 billion range, sources say.

In a statement, the big-box retailer said TikTok's integration of e-commerce and advertising "is a clear benefit to creators and users in those markets."

Walmart said it's teaming up with Microsoft in a bid for TikTok.

The retail giant confirmed to CNBC that it's interested in buying the popular short-form video application.

Walmart shares are up nearly 5% on the news.

TikTok's Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, is nearing an agreement to sell its U.S., Canadian, Australian and New Zealand operations in a deal that's likely to be in the $20 billion to $30 billion range, sources say. It has not yet chosen a buyer, but could announce the deal in coming days, the sources say.

With Walmart's confirmation, it joins several others trying to acquire the tech company, including Oracle.

Walmart is pursuing the acquisition at a time when it's trying to better compete with Amazon. It plans to launch a membership program, called Walmart+, soon. The subscription-based service is the retailer's answer to Amazon Prime, which includes original TV shows and movies.

In a statement, the big-box retailer said TikTok's integration of e-commerce and advertising "is a clear benefit to creators and users in those markets." It did not say how it would use TikTok or whether it would be part of Walmart+.

"We believe a potential relationship with TikTok US in partnership with Microsoft could add this key functionality and provide Walmart with an important way for us to reach and serve omnichannel customers as well as grow our third-party marketplace and advertising businesses," it said. "We are confident that a Walmart and Microsoft partnership would meet both the expectations of US TikTok users while satisfying the concerns of US government regulators."

The Lesson Weโ€™re Learning From TikTok? Itโ€™s All About Our Data

We should minimize how much we share with all of our favorite and not-so-favorite apps. Hereโ€™s how.

Is TikTok, the Chinese-owned social network that is used mostly by teenagers to post dance videos, a national security threat?

It depends on whom you ask.

President Trump has said it is and has threatened to ban the app in the United States. But security experts are more hesitant to draw conclusions. While there is no direct evidence that TikTok has done anything malicious with peopleโ€™s data, sharing information could be fundamentally less safe with a company that might allow the Chinese authorities to intercept it.

So I asked two companies that offer mobile security products to take a close look at TikTokโ€™s app to see what they could glean about it. They had very different takes.

Exclusive: ByteDance asks TikTok to draw up U.S. shutdown contingencies

(Reuters) - Chinaโ€™s ByteDance told engineers of its popular short-video app
TikTok this week to make contingencies should it need to shut down its U.S. operations, even as it works toward divesting them, people familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

ByteDance has been ordered by President Donald Trump to divest TikTok in the United States, amid security concerns over the personal data it handles. Microsoft Corp and Oracle Corp are among U.S. companies vying to acquire the assets of TikTok, which claims about 100 million monthly active users in the U.S. ByteDance is expected to pick a bidder to enter into exclusive talks as early as Friday, according to the sources.

Trump issued an executive order on Aug. 6 that would ban transactions with TikTok and its Chinese parent in 45 days. While TikTok has filed a lawsuit challenging the order, it is preparing for the possibility that it will have to shut down if it has not reached a deal with an acquirer by mid-September, the sources said. It hopes that any shutdown would be temporary, the sources added.

A sale would have to be greenlighted by both the United States and Chinese governments. The shutdown contingencies are also aimed at preparing TikTokโ€™s global operations for the possibility that one of the two countries blocks any deal, the sources said.

ByteDance told TikTok engineers in a memo this week to draw up plans for shutting down the app in the United States, the sources said.

The problem with banning TikTok

TikTokโ€™s in trouble. But so is the internet as we know it. Today a growing number of countries are pursuing various forms of internet sovereignty โ€” from Russia building a walled-off โ€œintranet,โ€ to India regularly shutting down its internet in areas of social unrest, to some European nations introducing a โ€œright to be forgottenโ€ from search engines.

TikTok booms in Southeast Asia as it picks path through political minefields

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - At 19, Sandy Saputra is big on TikTok Indonesia. Within a year, heโ€™s leapt from quiet, small-town life to star influencer status as more than 10.5 million followers lap up his toothy grin in dancing, pranking and lip-synching videos on the booming app.

Sandyโ€™s success, becoming his familyโ€™s main breadwinner as global brands like Coca Cola or Suntory pay to have their names on his light-hearted clips, comes as TikTok mushrooms across Southeast Asia. Data trackers show itโ€™s been downloaded hundreds of millions of times already in a region with a collective population of 630 million - half of them under 30.

The Social Dilemma

Why the algorithms of #TikTok are possibly optimized more for screentime and less for suicide removal is explained very clearly in the new Netflix documentary "The Social Dilemma". Director Jeff Orlowski has put all the ethics big shots from Silicon Valley in front of the camera - from Tristan Harris to Shoshanna Zuboff - and lets them once again unravel the business model of surveillance capitalism in a striking way.

ByteDance won't allow TikTok's algorithm to be part of a sale: Report

As the deadline for a forced sale or shutdown of the U.S. operations of the
TikTok video-sharing app fast approaches, ByteDance is said to have decided its algorithm won't be part of any sale that happens.

September 15, the date by which U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered ByteDance to either sell TikTok to a U.S. company or see the service banned from the U.S. market, is looming. Today, September 13, The South China Morning Post is reporting (based on an unnamed source that the SCMP says was briefed on the Chinese company's boardroom discussions) that ByteDance has decided TikTok's algorithm won't be included as part of the sale.

So now the question is will a sale still happen by Tuesday? Will Microsoft and Walmart, Oracle -- with close ties to Trump -- and/or various TikTok investors still see enough value in TikTok to push forward with a purchase? And for how much?

Even before today's report about terms around the algorithm, there were questions whether a sale would happen at all. The Wall Street Journal reported on September 9 that ByteDance was discussing with the U.S. government various possible arrangements that would allow TikTok to avoid a full sale of its U.S. operations. And before that, the Chinese government had put in place steps designed to make a sale to a U.S. company more difficult, if not impossible.

Breaking: USA bans WeChat and TikTok from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store

Starting from September 20, 2020

The US Commerce Department has announced prohibitions banning people in the US from downloading TikTok and WeChat in reponse to a pair of executive orders signed by US President Donald Trump in August.

In a press release on the matter, the US Department of Commerce noted: โ€œThe Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has demonstrated the means and motives to use these apps to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and the economy of the U.S. Todayโ€™s announced prohibitions, when combined, protect users in the U.S. by eliminating access to these applications and significantly reducing their functionality.โ€

Speaking on the matter, US Department of Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, was quoted saying, โ€œTodayโ€™s actions prove once again that President Trump will do everything in his power to guarantee our national security and protect Americans from the threads of the Chinese Communist Partyโ€ฆAt the Presidentโ€™s direction, we have taken significant action to combat Chinaโ€™s malicious collection of American citizensโ€™ personal data, while promoting our national values, democratic rules-based norms, and aggressive enforcement of U.S. laws and regulations.โ€

The new prohibitions on TikTok and WeChat will go into effect on September 20th, 2020. As part of the new directive, the following transactions are prohibited:

1. Any provision of service to distribute or maintain the WeChat or TikTok mobile applications, constituent code, or application updates through an online mobile application store in the U.S.

2. Any provision of services through the WeChat mobile application for the purpose of transferring funds or processing payments within the U.S.

We Are All Algorithms Now - Is that what's really destroying the legitimacy of our democracy?

Iโ€™ve never felt this way about an election before. For my entire adult life, campaigns could be exhilarating, tedious, crowded with incident or laden with foreboding, but you always felt that, at some point, there would be a resolution. The votes would be counted; the exit polls parsed; a decision made; and both sides would respect it. The one time that didnโ€™t happen โ€” in 2000 โ€” I felt for the first time an inkling of what I feel in every part of my psyche now: a sense that the system itself was buckling.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ ..(..)...
And the reason this dystopian scenario is so credible is not just the fault of these political actors. Itโ€™s ours too โ€” thanks to the impact of social media. I think weโ€™ve under-estimated just how deep the psychological damage has been in the Trump era โ€” rewiring the minds of everyone, including your faithful correspondent, in ways that make democratic discourse harder and harder and harder to model. The new Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma, is, for that reason, a true must-watch. It doesnโ€™t say anything shockingly new, but it persuasively weaves together a whole bunch of points to reveal just how deeply and thoroughly fucked we are. Seriously, take a look.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ ..(..)..
For #Facebook and #Google and #Instagram and #Twitter, the business goal quickly became maximizing and monetizing human attention via #addictive #dopamine hits. Attention, they meticulously found, is correlated with emotional intensity, outrage, shock and provocation. Give artificial intelligence this simple knowledge about what distracts and compels humans, let the algorithms do their work, and the profits snowball. The cumulative effect โ€” and itโ€™s always in the same incendiary direction โ€” is mass detachment from reality, and immersion in tribal fever.

A tip from a kid helps detect iOS and Android scam appsโ€™ 2.4 million downloads

Smartphone apps raked in ~$500,000, in part thanks to shilling on TikTok and Instagram

Researchers said that a tip from a child led them to discover aggressive adware and exorbitant prices lurking in iOS and Android smartphone apps with a combined 2.4 million downloads from the App Store and Google Play.

Posing as apps for entertainment, wallpaper images, or music downloads, some of the titles served intrusive ads even when an app wasnโ€™t active. To prevent users from uninstalling them, the apps hid their icon, making it hard to identify where the ads were coming from. Other apps charged from $2 to $10 and generated revenue of more than $500,000, according to estimates from SensorTower, a smartphone-app intelligence service

The apps came to light after a girl found a profile on TikTok that was promoting what appeared to be an abusive app and reported it to Be Safe Online, a project in the Czech Republic that educates children about online safety. Acting on the tip, researchers from security firm Avast found 11 apps, for devices running both iOS and Android, that were engaged in similar scams.
