🇵🇸 Report / Israel: Starvation Used as Weapon of War in Gaza | HRW–
International humanitarian law, or the laws of war, prohibits the starvation of civilians as a method of warfare. The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court provides that intentionally starving civilians by “depriving them of objects indispensable to their survival, including willfully impeding relief supplies” is a war crime. Criminal intent does not require the attacker’s admission but can also be inferred from the totality of the circumstances of the military campaign.
In addition, Israel’s continuing blockade of Gaza, as well as its more than 16-year closure, amounts to collective punishment of the civilian population, a war crime. As the occupying power in Gaza under the Fourth Geneva Convention, Israel has the duty to ensure that the civilian population gets food and medical supplies.

Geneva - Over 71% of participants in a study conducted in the Gaza Strip by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said that they suffer from extreme hunger, corroborating accusations that Israel uses starvation to punish Palestinian civilians.
Euro-Med Monitor conducted an analytical study that included a sample of 1,200 people in the Gaza Strip in order to ascertain the impact of the humanitarian crisis that Gazans are experiencing in the midst of Israel’s ongoing Israeli genocidal war, which began on 7 October.

It is calling for an independent investigation into the allegations.

Eyewitnesses told Al Jazeera on Wednesday that Israeli forces carried out field executions against some residents of the Anan building on Al-Jalaa Street in Gaza. This occurred after the forces stormed the building and trapped the women and children in rooms inside.

Euro-Med Monitor has also provided South Africa’s legal team with other memoranda about Israel’s mass killings, targeting of the Gaza Strip’s health sector, and various outcomes of the genocidal war against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip since South Africa submitted an application to institute proceedings against Israel on 29 December 2023.
