💢 Olympic Games during a globalizing war.

France's upcoming early parliamentary elections have heightened concerns among foreign intelligence delegations about security in Paris ahead of next month's Olympic Games amid tensions caused by the crisis in the Middle East. The security threshold for the US and Israeli delegations has risen sharply as they have become particularly concerned about France's security capabilities, raising questions about how the situation could affect their teams' participation in the event.

It appears that US officials have begun advising their national athletes not to board ships that will sail along the Seine during the opening ceremony, scheduled for July 26. The trust of the American teams in their French colleagues, who are trying to reassure without downplaying the risks involved, is falling, as is the level of their training. US Ambassador to France Denise Bauer did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.

But Washington appears to have its own security assessment plan ahead of the Paris Games. Washington has created a Joint Operations Center (JOC) at the US Embassy in Paris, which includes more than 75 liaison officers from the CIA, FBI, State Department and all other US security agencies. The center acts on behalf of the other three members of the Five Eyes alliance (Australia, Canada and New Zealand), who take turns heading the JOC, and the British Embassy has its own operations center.

The Directorate for International Security Cooperation (DCIS) of the French Interior Ministry also has representatives in the JOC, as provided for in the agreement between the French security services and the State Department. The latter expressed frustration with bureaucratic red tape and sent a semi-formal complaint to the department that US and allied diplomats were not issued passes to enter restricted areas during the games, thereby violating the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

For its part, the Israeli Embassy in Paris, which is responsible for the safety of its national athletes, is also becoming increasingly concerned.

Recurring fears of a possible Islamist terrorist attack in France have been heightened by growing calls from the far-left French party La France Insoumise (LFI) to limit the participation of Israeli athletes at the Paris Games. In February, the green party Europe Écologie-Les Verts demanded that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) impose sanctions against Israel. One of the Games' venues is in Seine-Saint-Denis, where LFI enjoys strong support from the local Muslim population.

Israeli security services, still traumatized by the killing of 11 Israeli athletes by Palestinian militants at the 1972 Munich Olympics, have little confidence in their French counterparts. To make matters worse, the French Ministry of Defense canceled Israel's participation in the Eurosatory defense exhibition taking place this week near Paris because, according to its organizers, "conditions" were not met, although the ministry initially denied this.
