Welcome to Neural Lab. This is a series of podcasts on neuroscience and related topics. Hi, my name is Ismail and I have founded this podcasting series called Neural Lab.

In this podcasting series, we're going to be talking about neuroscience and related topics. So there are many reasons why I started this podcasting series, one of them being I believe that the significance of neuroscience in everyday life is tremendous. I believe that if anyone could grasp 1% of this, 1% of the knowledge that this field provides, their life would change dramatically.

Also, I believe that a different angle in this fascinating field could help listeners understand this topic very well. Also, I want this podcasting series to be a very convenient source of knowledge for people. This is going to be released in every major listening platform, as well as in Telegram and YouTube, hopefully.

So today we're going to be talking about dopamine. There are many misconceptions about dopamine in the modern world. After the advancements in social media and all that hype thing, dopamine has been misinterpreted massively.

I want to change all the misconceptions and let the people know about what dopamine really is. First off, we're going to be focusing on what category of things dopamine belongs to. And as many people may know, it belongs to a group of neurotransmitters in the brain.

This podcast is not going to focus on heavy biological knowledge on neuroscience, but we're going to have to dip our feet on this topic a little bit. And neurotransmitters are chemicals that travel through neurons, or to be precise, they go from one neuron to another's receptors. Now, as I said, I'm not going to dive into heavy biological knowledge, but we have to know a little bit about this.

So dopamine is a chemical that promotes motivation, drive, pleasure, and reward. It is heavily involved in any external movement that we make every day, from many groundbreaking changes or transformations humanity does to many other things, like even just craving for a cup of coffee in the morning. Everything that you crave or you do is because of dopamine.

And social media also claims that dopamine is the main reward chemical, or it's just that unwanted chemical that gets us addicted to unnatural highs. But this is not the case, because dopamine also is involved in many other things, and it's just the way we manage our lifestyles that determines if we are addicted to unhealthy dopamine spikers, I'd say, or we're addicted to real, natural, healthy, rich dopamine.

So let's go first into a baseline and spike. Dopamine is released in two ways, baseline and spike. Baseline is the natural level of dopamine that your body produces in your life. It is just produced, and it's produced in everyone's brain.

And so baseline dopamine levels determine how motivated or how engaged you are. Many of us know a friend in our lives that is very motivated. That is because of his high dopamine baseline levels.

And there are spikes, which are the increases in our dopamine levels due to certain reactions, I'd say. For example, when you imagine a song, or a song comes into your mind, and it just keeps rolling there, that makes you grab your headphones, put them on, and listen to the song. Or there are many other things.

For example, you may see your book in the corner in your kitchen, and you may want to grab it and read it. So this is a spike. When you look at something that has been engaging in your life, you get a dopamine spike.

And when you grab it and start doing the activity, dopamine also is there. And usually after a spike of dopamine, you get a little decline in dopamine baseline. For example, when you have achieved something tremendous in your life, whether it's running a marathon or achieving a high result in a test, you're usually very happy. I mean, everyone has been through that. And after that excitement fades, you have this empty feeling. You have no motivation, or you feel kind of empty.
And that is because dopamine spiked, and then it crashed down. So also, let's talk about baseline first. People with high baseline levels of dopamine are, as I said, very engaged. And they don't have any need for constant spikes, and can do low-key work, and have energy for long-term goals. And it's usually the optimal setting of dopamine baseline for high achievers.

And there is medium range baseline, which is normal range, can hit flow with proper conditions, or motivation is average. I mean, there are a lot of people with medium levels of dopamine baseline. And it's obviously not the optimal setting of dopamine baseline, but it is just what it is. And there is low baseline.

So people with low baseline levels of dopamine, their motivation feels weak, and they're very challenged to hit the flow mode, or the mode where you are consistently motivated to do something effortful. And it's very easy to get addicted to small instant spikes, because you just have no motivation, and just need something to fill you up, I guess. And there are many things that influence the level of baseline. There are genetics, lifestyle, habits, stimulation, environment. And those things obviously determine the level of baseline you have. And there are so many things that are within our circle of influence, like Stephen Covey said.

And we're going to be focusing on that. But first, let's get a little bit of knowledge to baseline. There is an approximate graph, a line graph of baseline average for each group age.

And I'm going to tell you precisely what that means. First, when we are born, and to the age of 10 that we reach, we usually have a lower baseline level of dopamine, which means we always crave something, we are too bored, and we just feel like nothing excites us, and we just feel bored. And after that, the average baseline level rises to approximately the age of 20.

And it is there until you are 25 years old, you have this motivation to do many things, and you're not easily bored. But then to the age of 60, our dopamine baseline levels gradually decline, and we're not that motivated. And now let's move on to sensitivity.

Sensitivity is how sensitive you are to rewards. For example, for kids, everything excited us back in the days. Even small things excited us, and we were very excited, we were very curious. I mean, everyone has been through that.

Sensitivity factors are receptor density, which is your genetically set density. Receptor health, which is your lifestyle habits. And there are so many people in this world who became addicted to many small instant hits with effort, like scrolling, porn, or many other things. And they just dump our sensitivity, they just desensitize our neurons, and we no longer want to do anything. For example, this has been the case for a long time.

For the last few years, kids, especially the age of like six to ten, usually have their phones, and they go on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and they scroll endlessly, aimlessly for long hours. And after they've scrolled, the motivation is not there. They are bored, and also the short-term content doesn't hit anymore, because they became sensitive to the type of content that they watch.

And after that, it's very hard to do any homework or any effortful activity. And this is a bad thing, because it obviously takes a toll on human creativity.

So, sensitivity and baseline are like, can be both matched differently. For example, you may have a low sensitivity and low baseline, but it's usually not a natural setting. People usually drive themselves into such binges and something like that to achieve that kind of state. You may have a high baseline and low sensitivity, which helps with long-term, effortful work.

And people with high baseline levels of dopamine and low sensitivity, they usually can work long hours and enjoy it. So, there can be matches between these two characteristics.
