Early on November 2 an attacker began draining Mercado Bitcoin in waves across 17 blockchains.
The exchange's CEO called Chainalysis, and within 30 minutes its team handed police the addresses to freeze. It was a race against the clock: stablecoins can only be frozen before they get swapped into BTC and ETH.
Result: almost $10M frozen, over $9M of it in USDT blocked by Tether. The rest is still being traced, and the exchange says clients won't lose anything, reports Chainalysis.

The exchange published its first report on the October 29 breach, and it reads like a spy movie. The FBI links the attack to North Korea.
In summer one engineer installed a tampered Homebrew, which showed the hackers who runs the wallets. In September another developer was invited to two fake interviews and handed a "coding test" with malware. He opened it on his work laptop.
From there, using an internal AI tool, the attackers reached his colleagues and on October 29 the transaction signing service. Through EIP-7702 they gained rights over an Ethereum hot wallet, so halting withdrawals didn't stop them. Access was cut only four hours later.
About $2.85B is frozen and Binance has already refilled 98% of the affected assets from its own funds, reports CoinDesk.
