Buried underground during WWII, the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) Board meeting minutes (1906–1942) survived the war, and are now published in a 14-volume set! ✍️

We are honoured to be one of the few libraries to receive these invaluable and rare copies, which offer first-hand historical material for scholars studying local Chinese business culture and Singapore’s social development from 1906 up to the pre-war years.

These gems shed light on:
💡The Chamber’s role and influence in Singapore’s social transformation before WWII
💡Complex relationships with the Qing and Republican governments in China, as well as the British colonial authorities
💡How Singapore’s Chinese business community adapted and thrive amid change

All minutes were handwritten by Secretariat staff, including literary icon Khoo Seok Wan, making them not just history, but calligraphy art. 🤩

What a brew-tiful time we had! From learning more about coffee & fermentation to the art of brewing, we took a much-needed break from midterms to unwind and recharge. 🌿💫

It was more than just coffee — it was connection, laughter, and a reminder that sometimes the best way to stay grounded is to pause, sip, and savour the moment. ☕️💛

Here’s to good beans, good vibes, and getting through midterms one cup at a time! 💪📚

The Chinese character “静” (jìng) goes beyond ‘silence’, a word often associated with libraries. This calligraphy, gifted to us by Reverend Song Nian (松年), embodies both outward stillness and inner tranquility. 🍂

As we reflect on its meaning, we also honour the life of a monk, a master calligrapher, and spiritual teacher whose works continue to inspire. 🎐 Explore the story behind in our latest article: https://blog.nus.edu.sg/linus/2025/09/24/%e9%9d%99-jing-by-reverend-song-nian/

What happens when five strangers come together to explore Singapore’s heritage? 🤔

For project Shore to Shore - which started through the TF-NUS Heritage Champions programme - it became a journey of discovery, friendship, and purpose. We caught up with them to find out how an idea grew into a meaningful exploration of the Southern Islands, and how the experience was memorable and created opportunities they never expected

Kicking off the series, we hear from Elaine Mok (@tarotonthemoon), who recently graduated from NUS with a Master’s in Linguistics, as she reflects on her journey and what she’s learned along the way.

Stay tuned as we’ll be sharing more stories from the Shore To Shore team soon! 👀
