What's everyone doing this vacay?

Heard of jong boat racing? ⛵️ It's a traditional Malay sport and a beloved pastime among Southern islanders. It involves racing jongs—miniature wooden sailboats—across the water, blending craftsmanship, wind knowledge, and playful competition. 🐬

Here's your chance to try it. 🌴 Enjoy a day by the scenic shores of East Coast Park with family or friends, while gaining hands-on experience in this vanishing maritime tradition. 📕Two groundbreaking periodicals — Al-Imam and Al-Ikhwan — stand as powerful testaments to a key chapter in the Malay-Muslim reformist movement.
Preserved and digitised in our library, these works offer rich insights into early 20th-century intellectual discourse, shaped by figures like Syed Sheikh Al-Hadi. 💬🌟 https://blog.nus.edu.sg/linus/2025/04/03/al-imam-al-ikhwan-and-the-reformist-vision-of-syed-sheikh-al-hadi-key-intellectual-publications-in-nus-libraries-special-collections/
Statement by University Librarian on Relocation of Yale-NUS College Library Books

In maintaining our library collection, excess books are routinely rehomed in other libraries or given away to faculty members and, at times, students. Books which are not taken up are then sent for recycling, in line with common library practices.

In our current exercise of relocating the books from the Yale-NUS College Library, the majority of the books has been rehomed within NUS Libraries.

In this instance, excess books were offered only to faculty members, and not students.

We understand later that many students are interested in having these books and we would have usually acceded to their requests. We did not do so on this occasion, and we apologise for the operational lapse.

In view of the strong interest from students, we are now organising a giveaway on campus so that the excess books can find a new home (1/2)

Going forward, we are reviewing our process and will take proactive steps to distribute excess books to the NUS community and the wider public so that they can benefit as many people as possible.

Thank you to the Yale-NUS community - faculty, staff, students and alumni - for coming to bid the Yale-NUS Library a fond farewell, and helping to re-home our books. We're now left with around 2,000 books yet to be adopted!

If you're planning to visit us in the next few days, we suggest that you come early to avoid being disappointed, and to check on our social media for the latest updates. Books will be released to adopters on a first-come-first-served basis.

Thank you once again for your keen interest, and for giving us a chance to set things right.

⚓️ Dive into the rich maritime heritage of the Bugis people with the "Daeng Paduppa", a handwritten manuscript that systematically recorded travels, daily occurrences, and observations on maritime life in the 1880s. ⛵️

This rare manuscript not only offers a window into a long-lost a indigenous knowledge system, but also challenges the dominance of colonial and external narratives in Southeast Asian historiography. https://blog.nus.edu.sg/linus/2025/04/30/a-bugis-journal-log/

💻 Long before the age of Google and digital databases, finding research periodicals was no easy feat😵‍💫Yet students and researchers still found what they needed—thanks to publications painstakingly compiled and published by the university library. This is the story of how the library created its own systems to help the academic community locate and access periodicals on the shelves, making knowledge discoverable in a pre-digital world.🔎📚 https://blog.nus.edu.sg/linus/2025/05/21/university-librarys-publications-a-gateway-to-find-past-research-periodicals/
