The Causeway was the place to be for fishing aficionados well into the 1960s! 🎣 Its ease of access to deep-sea fishing without the need to hire a boat made it a fishing hot spot. The calm sea surrounding the landmark attracted marine life, and anglers could find fishes such as the tenggiri (Spanish mackerel) and parang (dorab wolf-herring) in the waters. 🐟🌊

R.B. Ooi was one of the earliest local Malayan journalists writing in English and had worked for newspapers like the Straits Echo and the Malayan Times. His daughter, 96-year-old Irene Ooi, shares about her father and his work—described through his letters to her, and a personal collection of his typewritten articles, radio plays and photographs, which were donated to the National Library, Singapore.
