๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ US and Taiwan to keep pressing for Taipeiโ€™s inclusion in World Health Assembly

US and Taiwanese officials have redoubled efforts to secure Taipeiโ€™s participation in the World Health Assembly and other multilateral bodies, following an unsuccessful bid to join the UN forum earlier this year.

Without revealing any details, the US State Department said that the meeting โ€“ organized by the de facto US embassy on Taiwan, and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Washington โ€“ included representatives from the State Department and Taiwanโ€™s foreign ministry.

โ€œThis discussion focused on near-term opportunities to support Taiwanโ€™s expanded participation in the World Health Assembly and other global public health bodies, the International Civil Aviation Organization, as well as Taiwanโ€™s meaningful participation in non-UN international, regional and multilateral organizations,โ€ it said.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ China pressures Taiwan with trade accusations

China on Friday pressured Taiwan with a trade barrier probe a month before the island holds key elections.

China's Commerce Ministry said it had determined Taiwan had put up trade barriers in contravention of both World Trade Organization rules and a trade deal signed in 2010 with Taiwan. These barriers have had a "negative impact" on Chinese companies, it added.

The ministry stopped short of announcing any countermeasures. China's Taiwan Affairs Office, in a separate statement, said evidence from the probe is clear and that its conclusions objective and fair.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ US approves $300 mln support for Taiwan's tactical information systems

The US State Department has approved a $300 million sale of equipment to help maintain Taiwan's tactical information systems, the Pentagon said.

The Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the sale was for follow-on life cycle support to maintain Taiwan's Command, Control, Communications and Computers, or C4, capabilities.

Taiwan's presidential office said the deal, the 12th arms sale by President Joe Biden's administration to Taipei, demonstrates the importance the US government attaches great importance to the island's defensive needs.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ Taiwan reports more suspected Chinese weather balloons crossing Taiwan Strait

Two suspected Chinese weather balloons flew across the sensitive Taiwan Strait on Sunday but stayed well to the north of Taiwan, the island's defense ministry said on Monday.

Taiwan's defense ministry said the two balloons were detected at 9:03 a.m. and 2:43 p.m. after crossing the strait's median 204 km northwest of the northern Taiwanese port city of Keelung.

The ministry's initial judgement is that they were weather balloons, spokesperson Sun Li-fang said.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ Taiwan sets prison terms and fines for spying on its military bases

Taiwan aims to ramp up security and prevent spying around its military bases, with heavy fines and prison sentences for unauthorized activities in those areas under legislation passed this week.

Anybody found making unauthorized surveys or measurements, taking pictures or videos, or engaging in any other reconnaissance activities inside a base could now face up to three years in prison.

The restriction has raised concerns that it could snare military enthusiasts photographing or filming fighter jets or other weapons during military drills and other activities.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ Taiwan accuses China of economic coercion after tariff cut removals

Taiwan on Thursday accused China of "typical economic coercion" after Beijing announced the end of tariff cuts on some chemical imports from the island.

China's Finance Ministry said that starting January 1, tariff cuts will be suspended for 12 products, including acrylic and p-xylene, citing "discriminatory prohibitions and restrictions" Taiwan imposed on Chinese exports in violation of a 2010 trade deal.

Taiwan's Office of Trade Negotiations, in a statement, said China was carrying out economic coercion and that it should stop its "one-sided political manipulation" and have talks under the World Trade Organization.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ Taiwan reports more Chinese military activity as election approaches

Taiwan reported Chinese warplanes and warships around the island on Saturday, including aircraft crossing the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait, as Beijing continues military activities with three weeks to go before Taiwan votes.

Taiwan's defense ministry said that since 1:30 p.m. on Saturday it had detected J-10, J-11 and J-16 fighters as well as early warning aircraft operating in the airspace to north, middle and southwest of Taiwan.

Ten aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait median line, or areas close by, working with Chinese warships to carry out "joint combat readiness patrols", the ministry said.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ We won't let there be war with China, Taiwan VP frontrunner says

Taiwan's ruling party will not let war break out with China, but it is China that is to blame for stirring up tensions, Taipei's former top diplomat in the United States and now frontrunner to become its next vice president.

In a live televised pre-election policy address by the three vice presidential candidates, Lai's running mate Hsiao Bi-khim said her opponents had consistently blamed the DPP for tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

"But the whole world knows that the real reason is that China has been expanding outward in an authoritarian posture in recent years, trying to change the existing international order and status quo. Even during the KMT's rule, the expansion of China's armaments never stopped," Hsiao said.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ Biden signs $886 billion defense bill to boost Indo-Pacific deterrence

US President Joe Biden signed into law an $886 billion defense policy package including measures to counter Chinese military activity in the Indo-Pacific region and assist the Taiwanese forces.

The National Defense Authorization Act for the fiscal year to September 2024 includes $14.7 billion for the Pacific Deterrence Initiative, part of US efforts to enhance military capabilities through drills with its allies and partner countries in the region.

While mentioning the need for a comprehensive training and capacity-building program for Taiwan's military, the law requires US cooperation on the self-ruled democratic island's bid to strengthen military cybersecurity activities.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ Taiwan official takes KMT message to voters in mainland China

A leader of Taiwanโ€™s main opposition party wrapped up a whistle-stop mainland China tour on Friday, spreading the Kuomintangโ€™s message with less than a month to go until a presidential election on the island.

In an apparent effort to win over mainland-based voters from the Taiwanese business community, Andrew Hsia Li-yan, vice-chairman of the Beijing-friendly KMT, visited five southern cities to rally support against the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

According to Taiwanese media estimates, there are roughly 1.2 million people from the island living on the mainland, accounting for about 5% of Taiwanโ€™s population. Most of the voters in this group tend to support the KMT and party officials often make the trip across the Taiwan Strait before elections.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Taiwan, Canada sign bilateral investment agreement

Taiwan and Canada signed a bilateral investment deal, boosting the governmentโ€™s efforts to bolster business ties with like-minded democratic partners and possibly easing the nationโ€™s entry into a major pan-Pacific trade pact called CPTPP.

Taiwan has been seeking greater diplomatic and moral support from major Western democracies, such as Canada, as it faces growing military and political pressure from China.

The Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Arrangement is part of Canadaโ€™s plan to increase trade and influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Taiwan is not seeing any signs of large-scale Chinese military activity before elections next month but is keeping a close watch on China, the island's defense ministry said.

"So far we haven't seen signs they're making big moves, but nothing today doesn't mean there won't be something tomorrow or the day after tomorrow," Taiwan defense ministry spokesperson Sun Li-fang told reporters.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ China threatens more trade sanctions on Taiwan

The Chinese government on Wednesday threatened to place further trade sanctions on Taiwan if the ruling party "stubbornly" adheres to supporting independence.

Taiwan this month accused China of economic coercion and election interference after Beijing announced the end of tariff cuts on some chemical imports from the island, saying Taipei violated a trade agreement between the two sides signed in 2010.

Speaking at a regular news briefing in Beijing, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, said the "root cause" of resolving problems related to the 2010 deal was Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party's adherence to the island's formal independence.

Taiwan's economy ministry said it had expanded a list of sanctioned goods for Russia and Belarus to prevent Taiwanese high-tech goods from being used for military purposes.

The list includes equipment for making semiconductors, the production of which Taiwan is a world leader in, as well as certain chemicals and medicines, adding to previous announcements which already targeted the chip industry.

The new sanctions are consistent with those already announced by the European Union, the United States and other countries, the ministry said in a statement.

Taiwan's foreign minister says it is documenting its experiences with China's alleged attempts to interfere in elections next week and will publish its analysis soon after the vote.

Taiwan's government has pointed to military and economic pressure as well as Chinese-subsidised trips to China for local Taiwanese officials, as evidence of Beijing's alleged interference.

"Taiwan is taking measures to counter China's interference and is documenting its experiences. Analysis will be published soon after the elections in consultation with international experts," Foreign Minister Joseph Wu wrote in the latest issue of The Economist, without giving details.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ Taiwanโ€™s concerns grow and options shrink as Beijing patrols Kinmen waters

The increased presence of mainland Chinese coastguard ships patrolling the waters around Taiwan-controlled Kinmen has left Taipei with a dilemma regarding the most appropriate steps to assert its claim.

Under Taiwanโ€™s rules of engagement and โ€œfirst strikeโ€ policy, relevant authorities are authorized to target and, in serious cases, open fire on vessels persistently violating warnings by remaining within the waters of Kinmen.

However, analysts caution that the islandโ€™s authorities have limited options in enforcing these rules, as tougher actions could escalate into unintended cross-strait conflict, a scenario even the United States seeks to avoid.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ Bill would create US fund for nations facing Beijing โ€˜coercionโ€™ on Taiwan

A bipartisan bill introduced in the US Congress on Friday would direct US assistance to countries that face โ€œcoercion or pressureโ€ from China for trying to deepen ties with Taiwan. The legislation would authorize US$120 million over three years for a โ€œTaiwan Allies Fundโ€.

According to the billโ€™s text, the US seeks to encourage countries to strengthen bonds with Taiwan and to aid those that โ€œlack the economic or political capability to effectively respondโ€ to retaliation from China.

The new fund would form part of a broader โ€œCountering PRC Influence Fundโ€, and qualifying countries would be eligible to receive up to US$5 million a year.
