One in three children under the age of two in northern Gaza is now acutely malnourished, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa).

"Children's malnutrition is spreading fast and reaching unprecedented levels in Gaza. Famine is looming. There is no time to waste," Unrwa said in a social media post on Saturday.

In recent days, several children have died in Gaza of malnutrition and dehydration. The total number of Palestinians killed in Gaza since 7 October has risen to 31,553.

The Gaza media office said in a statement that 18 people were killed due to faulty aid airdrop operations, including 12 people who died drowning in the sea while trying to reach aid boxes in northern Gaza.

The other six were crushed in the crowd trying to reach aid the office says was thrown "in a wrong way."

"The airdrop operations have become a real threat to the lives of hungry citizens," the statement read.

Thousands of Egyptian Muslims gathered in streets lined with long tables to break their fast together in a mass "iftar" meal in Ezbet Hamada in Cairo's Matariya suburb, during the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan.

The gathering, which was reportedly attended by 5,000 people, marked the middle of Ramadan and was deemed the "largest iftar in Egypt."
The mass iftar later turned into a big demonstration when attendees started chanting for Palestine and Gaza.

"With our soul, with our blood, we sacrifice for you, Palestine," they chanted at the annual iftar "with our soul, with our blood, we sacrifice for you, Gaza."

This spontaneous move allowed Egyptians to temporarily bypass the government's heavy restrictions on protests for Gaza.

Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari said in a video statement that he spoke to World Central Kitchen (WCK) founder Jose Anders and expressed his "deepest condolences" and "sincere sorrow" to the organisation as well as "allied nations" who have been procuring aid to the Gaza Strip.

The statement comes after WCK said that seven of its aid workers from the UK, Australia, Poland, Palestine and a dual American-Canadian national were killed by an Israeli strike on their vehicle.

“We have been reviewing the incident at the highest levels to understand the circumstances of what happened and how it happened,” he said.

Hagari said Israel will probe the "serious incident" to "reduce the risk of such an event from occurring again," though he did not directly take responsibility for the attack.

The World Food Programme (WFP) reiterated its call for a ceasefire in Gaza as it warns of famine closing in. and malnutrition among children spreading at "record pace".

"One in three children below the age of two is now acutely malnourished," the organisation said.

For months, the UN and other humanitarian groups have been warning of famine in northern Gaza. In late March, 70 percent of the population was suffering from catastrophic levels of hunger, according to a recent UN-backed report.

The International Court of Justice ordered Israel last week, in a legally binding decision, to "ensure, without delay" that humanitarian aid is provided to Gaza, encompassing essentials such as food, water, electricity, and other fundamental necessities.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told a Senate hearing that Washington doesn't have evidence that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

“We don’t have evidence of that,” Austin told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The comments came after a group of pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted the hearing, accusing Austin of greenlighting genocide in the besieged enclave.

Israel is currently facing a case at the International Court of Justice, where South Africa has accused them of committing genocide.

The US is also facing an ongoing lawsuit in California, where a group of Palestinians are accusing the American government of complicity in an unfolding genocide in Gaza.

Severe infections and epidemics are spreading in Gaza due to the overflow of sewage into the streets and the lack of clean drinking water, Gaza's health ministry warns.

In a post on Facebook, the ministry said there is an alarming rise in cases of hepatitis and meningitis, and called upon “all relevant national, international and humanitarian institutions” to interfere for help and support.

📰 Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that at least one thousand Palestinian civilians from Gaza are receiving treatment in Turkey.

Erdogan made the comments during a joint address with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and initially said that one thousand “Hamas members” are being treated in hospitals.

However, two Turkish sources with knowledge speaking to Middle East Eye said the president misspoke and in fact that number referred to Palestinian civilians from Gaza.

In a press conference with his Greek counterpart, held in the Turkish capital of Ankara, Erdogan told reporters that he considered Hamas to be a “resistance organisation”.

Israeli Opposition Leader Yair Lapid said on Wednesday that as long as the current government is in power, Israel will not be able to win its war against Hamas.

“The government has lost control,” Lapid wrote on X. “Soldiers are killed every day in Gaza and they fight among themselves on television. The cabinet is disassembled and non-functional. Ministers protest in front of cabinet meetings.”

“One cabinet sends humanitarian aid convoys and the other burns them,” he continues. “Relations with the US are collapsing, the middle class is collapsing, they have lost the north.”

Lapid’s comments come as Netanyahu, the minister of defence and other government officials publicly sparred over the Gaza war plan.

A South African man appeared in court on Tuesday accused of stabbing to death a mother and of wounding her husband and son because of the family’s pro-Palestinian views.

Grayson Beare, 44, is charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder over the attack, which took place on Sunday in a suburb of the eastern city of Durban, prosecutors said.

Beare was arrested at the crime scene - the home of the victims - in the early hours of Sunday “in possession of a blood-stained knife”, police said.

Detectives initially said the motive of the violence was not clear.
But a 10-year-old survivor - understood to be the woman’s daughter - told investigators that “the suspect stated that he was stabbing them because they supported Palestine"

📰 A Berlin court on Tuesday rejected an urgent request by a number of Palestinian residents from Gaza to stop the government approving permits for the export of German weapons to Israel on grounds that they might be used in violation of humanitarian law.

The court said that the Palestinians had not shown that decisions on arms exports to Israel were actually pending.

Germany had abstained from issuing any export licenses this year.

📰 On Wednesday, a report published by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry concluded that the frequency and severity of sexual and gender-based violations meant that they were likely “part of [Israeli security forces] operating procedures”.

The inquiry detailed multiple instances of Israeli forces publicly stripping Palestinian women of their clothes and veils, and subjecting them to sexual harassment in front of their families during ground operations in Gaza.

The commission noted that “Palestinian men and boys have been disproportionally affected and victimised on many grounds”, and heard several reports of male victims being subjected to sexual violence in Gaza and the West Bank by Israeli forces.

📰 At least 14 Israelis were likely intentionally killed by the Israeli army on 7 October as part of a protocol aimed at preventing capture, a new United Nations report has found.

The report by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry (COI) documented repeated uses of the so-called Hannibal Directive on 7 October as Israel was combatting Hamas fighters who entered southern Israel from Gaza.

The directive, when active, indicates that the Israeli army should use any and all means to prevent the capture of Israeli soldiers, even if it involves killing them.

📰 Two Egyptian security sources said that Hamas has requested a written guarantee from the US for a permanent ceasefire as well as the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip in order to agree to the US-backed ceasefire proposal.

Biden’s ceasefire proposal, the so-called “three phase plan”, entails the gradual release of Israeli captives held in Gaza, the freeing of Palestinian prisoners and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from areas in the Gaza Strip over two phases. The plan also includes the reconstruction of Gaza and the return hostages’ bodies.

While the US claims that Israel has accepted the proposal, Israel has not publicly confirmed its acceptance.

The organisations listed in the open letter include Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, HaYovel Inc, One Israel Fund, the Jewish National Fund and IsraelGives.
