This "sovereignty" of Croatia and Slovenia has used Germany and NATO later as an alibi to station their military troops there. Nothing else does Putin now. He has recognized the sovereignty of Luhansk and Donetsk and follows the request of their governments to protect them from further reprisals by the Ukraine government. International law or not - if you insist on it, you should have complied with it yourself first. If USA, Germany and other European states have the opinion to support the sovereignty of breakaway regions (Baltic States, Croatia, Slovenia) against their government thousands of kilometers away from their own national borders, then it should be understood that Russia does the same with states DIRECTLY bordering their own territory. The U.S. and the EU have encouraged the Ukrainian leadership to fight the civil war in eastern Ukraine against its people with all its might. Now these territories have declared themselves independent and are asking Russia for assistance. Putin is sitting back, recognizing the independence and providing what he sees as now sovereign states with the assistance they want. The West and the Ukrainian government gambled high with their scenario (the stake was eastern Ukraine), with the result that they lost the eastern Ukrainian territories. Net find.
