The East-Ukraine conflict: Germany and the Western world is outraged by the Russian recognition of the eastern Ukrainian territories of Luhansk and Donetsk. In these areas, where the majority of the population is Russian, a civil war has been raging for 8 years between the local population, and the Ukrainian government forces from Kiev. The majority of the citizens in Luhansk and Donezek have been striving for secession from Ukraine for years - but this is being deliberately concealed here in the West. The pro-Russian citizens in eastern Ukraine are being inundated with reprisals from Kiev. Now they have turned to Russia and asked for recognition of their sovereignty, and Russia agreed to this yesterday. That this does not please the West is logical.
But that is exactly what the EU did, namely when Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania unilaterally proclaimed their independence from the Soviet Union in 1990. Against the will of the Soviet Union and international law, the EU recognized the sovereignty of these three Soviet republics. It was even more brazen when Germany single-handedly - against the will of the USA and other EU countries!!! - unilaterally recognized the independence or secession of Croatia and Slovenia from Yugoslavia! This "sovereignty" of Croatia and Slovenia has used Germany and NATO later as an alibi to station their military troops there. Nothing else does Putin now. He has recognized the sovereignty of Luhansk and Donetsk and follows the request of their governments to protect them from further reprisals by the Ukraine government. International law or not - if you insist on it, you should have complied with it yourself first. If USA, Germany and other European states have the opinion to support the sovereignty of breakaway regions (Baltic States, Croatia, Slovenia) against their government thousands of kilometers away from their own national borders, then it should be understood that Russia does the same with states DIRECTLY bordering their own territory. The U.S. and the EU have encouraged the Ukrainian leadership to fight the civil war in eastern Ukraine against its people with all its might. Now these territories have declared themselves independent and are asking Russia for assistance. Putin is sitting back, recognizing the independence and providing what he sees as now sovereign states with the assistance they want. The West and the Ukrainian government gambled high with their scenario (the stake was eastern Ukraine), with the result that they lost the eastern Ukrainian territories. Net find.
