๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Iran threatens full-scale war if the United States continues bombing the country.
Monday cpi explained
Global Markets Snapshot ยท July 15, 2026

๐Ÿ”ฅ Super Tuesday Verdict: CPI Cools, Warsh Hawkish, Oil Burns

Markets faced a triple test overnight โ€“ US June CPI data, Fed Chair Warsh's first congressional testimony, and Big 5 bank earnings all landed simultaneously. The verdict: CPI cooled more than expected, July rate hike odds plunged from 42% to 17%; Warsh struck a hawkish tone, declaring "zero tolerance" for high inflation; oil continued its surge on the Hormuz crisis, with Brent approaching $85. The three forces offset each other, leaving US stocks marginally higher.

1. ๐Ÿ“ˆ US Stocks: CPI Sparks Semis Rally, IBM Crashes 25%

All three major indices rose โ€“ Dow +0.02% at 52,508.66 (recovering from a 452-point early drop), S&P 500 +0.38% at 7,543.89, Nasdaq +0.9% at 26,107.01.

Semiconductors led the comeback: SK Hynix ADR +27.2%, Micron +5%, Nvidia +4%. Banks surged: Goldman Sachs +9% on 84% profit surge; JPMorgan +4% on 41% beat.

But IBM suffered a historic collapse โ€“ preliminary Q2 revenue and EPS disappointed, stock crashed 25% โ€“ its worst single-day drop in at least 58 years, wiping out $69B in market cap.

Tech stocks mixed: Google +2%, Meta, Tesla, Amazon up slightly; SpaceX -2%, Microsoft -1%, Apple -0.77%.

๐Ÿ’ฌ The CPI print gave markets "Fed pause" ammunition, fueling semis and banks. But IBM's collapse is a reminder โ€“ not every company is winning in the AI era. Warsh's hawkish comments planted a warning: don't treat this CPI as "mission accomplished."

2. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ CPI: First Negative Monthly Print in 6 Years โ€“ Rate Odds Plunge to 17%

US June CPI crushed expectations โ€“ headline CPI +3.5% YoY (exp. 3.8%, prior 4.2%), -0.4% MoM (exp. -0.1%) โ€“ the first negative monthly print in six years. Core CPI +2.6% YoY (exp. 2.8%, prior 2.9%), 0.0% MoM.

Energy drove the decline โ€“ energy prices fell 5.7% in June, the largest monthly drop since April 2020. Gasoline prices plunged 9.7%.

July rate hike odds crashed from 42% to 17% post-data. The 2-year yield tumbled 14bps; 10-year closed at 4.591%, -2.61bps.

๐Ÿ’ฌ This is an inflation report that could change the Fed's policy path. But Warsh warned: "Some people see this morning's data and declare mission accomplished. I don't share that view." Oil's 22% weekly surge hasn't shown up in June data โ€“ July inflation will be the real test.

3. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Warsh Testimony: "Zero Tolerance" โ€“ Rejects "Mission Accomplished"

Chair Warsh delivered his first congressional testimony before the House Financial Services Committee, striking a firmly hawkish tone.

Key takeaways:

"Zero tolerance" for 5 years of high inflation โ€“ "This committee will not tolerate persistently elevated inflation"

Rejected "mission accomplished" โ€“ "Some see today's data and declare victory โ€“ I do not share that view"

Defended Fed independence โ€“ declined forward guidance, emphasized data-dependent decision-making

Launched major reforms โ€“ 5 task forces reviewing communication, balance sheet, data, inflation framework

AI as an inflation risk โ€“ AI investment is pushing up certain prices, adding a new dimension to inflation pressures

๐Ÿ’ฌWarsh's debut sent one clear signal โ€“ the Fed won't be held hostage by one CPI print. Markets wanted a "rate pause" confirmation โ€“ they got "inflation surge will eventually become history" instead. He testifies before the Senate Banking Committee Wednesday โ€“ every word will be scrutinized.

4. ๐Ÿ’ต Bonds and Dollar: Yields Fall, Dollar Weakens

Treasury yields fell across the curve โ€“ 2-year -7.76bps at 4.193%, 10-year -2.61bps at 4.591%.

DXY -0.37% at 100.93 โ€“ as cooling inflation weakened rate hike expectations. EUR/USD +0.34% at $1.1419, GBP/USD +0.33% at $1.3390.

USD/JPY at 162.2190, -0.15%.

๐Ÿ’ฌ CPI was a "short-term antidote" for bonds and the dollar โ€“ rate expectations fall โ†’ yields drop โ†’ dollar weakens. But Warsh's hawkish comments gave that "antidote" an expiration date. 4.59% on the 10-year remains historically elevated โ€“ markets aren't fully relaxing on rates.

5.๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Oil: Brent Approaches $85 โ€“ Trump's 24-Hour Reversal
โค1
WTI +1.5% at $79.34/bbl, Brent +1.7% at $84.73/bbl, up over 4% intraday.

Trump's "24-hour reversal" grabbed headlines โ€“ Monday he announced a 20% toll on Hormuz shipping. By Tuesday, he abandoned the plan under pressure from Gulf allies, replacing it with trade/investment cooperation. But he also vowed a "total blockade" on Iran โ€“ Hormuz open to all except Iranian vessels.

Meanwhile, conflict continues to escalate โ€“ US strikes hit multiple Iranian sites; Iran fired missiles and drones at Kuwait and Bahrain; two UAE tankers were struck, killing one and injuring eight.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Trump's "protection fee" lasted just 24 hours โ€“ that alone is a market signal: Gulf states won't pay for Hormuz passage. But the reversal hasn't changed oil's upward trend โ€“ the US-Iran military standoff and Hormuz's actual status are the real pricing anchors. TD Securities warned: "We need de-escalation fast โ€“ or energy markets' second-round reaction could be much more severe."

6. ๐Ÿฅ‡ Gold: CPI Rally, But Still Capped by Strong Dollar

Spot gold rebounded sharply, +1.27%, trading around $4,046/oz in Asia. Silver +1.79% at ~$58.66/oz.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Gold finally climbed back from below $4,000. CPI cools โ†’ rate expectations fall โ†’ dollar weakens โ†’ gold rallies โ€“ a clean chain. But $4,046 is still far from recent highs. With oil surging, geopolitical conflict raging, and Warsh sounding hawkish, how far can gold's rally really go?

7. โ‚ฟ Bitcoin: Holds $63,700 โ€“ Short Squeeze Continues

BTC at ~$63,700, holding steady. ETH at ~$1,800.

๐Ÿ’ฌ BTC has bounced from 58K to 63.7K โ€“ up nearly 10% in three weeks. CPI cools โ†’ rate expectations fall โ†’ liquidity improves โ†’ crypto rallies โ€“ a clean chain. But $64K-$65K remains strong resistance โ€“ breaking through needs more catalysts. With US-Iran conflict ongoing, crypto as a risk asset still faces headwinds.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Big Picture

Super Tuesday's triple test is over โ€“ the market's verdict: up, but not decisively.

CPI cooling gave markets "Fed pause" ammunition โ€“ July rate odds from 42% to 17%. Warsh's hawkish tone took some of that ammunition away โ€“ "mission far from accomplished." Oil surging reminded markets โ€“ Middle East gunfire won't stop for one CPI print.

Three contradictions are driving markets:

CPI cooling vs. Warsh hawkish โ€“ data says "inflation is falling," the chair says "don't get too excited" โ€“ markets are caught in the middle

Oil surging vs. rate expectations falling โ€“ oil up 22% in a week โ†’ inflation rebound fears โ†’ yet rate expectations are falling โ€“ this contradiction is unsustainable

Geopolitical conflict vs. risk-on โ€“ Hormuz in turmoil, yet stocks keep rallying โ€“ markets are selectively ignoring risk

What to watch Wednesday (July 15) :

Warsh Senate Banking Committee testimony โ€“ Day 2, markets hanging on every word

US-Iran conflict โ€“ Trump's "total blockade" on Iran, Iran vows "no retreat"

Oil above $80 โ€“ Brent near $85, can it hold?

China June trade data โ€“ exports +27%, imports +36%, surplus $125.6B
