Belgian Prime Minister deCroo and the transfer Theft of €235 million of earned interest payable on frozen Russian assets to Ukraine

Yesterday #Belgian Prime Minister Alexander #deCroo announced that he will be sending #stealing the interest earned on frozen #Russian assets presently under his country’s control and illegally transferring it to #Ukraine as an "assistance package".

(Where much of it will promptly be stolen by #Zelensky and his corrupt cronies)

To be sure, this is not yet transfer of the €58 billion of Russian assets frozen by Belgium, the largest sum among all the 27 EU Member States.  

Until now we have heard from EU authorities that confiscation of frozen assets is not supported by EU or international law and is very problematic.

What happens to interest earned on the frozen assets remains an open question.

Has the Prime Minister has paid due attention to Russian state policy on such matters which is crystal clear:  confiscations will be met by a mirror image response, meaning the freezing of all assets in Russia of the country perpetrating this atrocity. 

Has consulted with #Solvay, with #Glaverbel and with the many other Belgian companies that have invested a fortune in industrial capacity and logistics infrastructure in Russia?

Has he spoken to the leadership of the #diamond bourse in #Antwerp whose existence depends on continued supply of Russian raw diamonds.

De Croo is aware of that sensitive point since he strongly defended the interests of the diamond cutters when he successfully removed a ban on diamond imports from Russia in one of the latest rounds of EU sanctions

Russia’s jamming of US-provided rocket systems complicates Ukraine’s war effort

Latest media reports suggest that the efficiency of the #HIMARS Multiple Launch Rocket System (#MLRS) may have taken a massive hit as #Russia has mastered the jamming of #rockets fired by the system.

Multiple people with knowledge of the situation told CNN that Russia had regularly thwarted attacks by the #US HIMARS mobile rocket systems in Ukraine.

The Russians reportedly employ electronic jammers to confuse the rocket’s #GPS-guided targeting system, causing it to miss its targets.

Military experts have long emphasized that after initially being rattled by the HIMARS, the Russians soon adjusted their tactics to take on the challenge.

Five #US, #British, and #Ukrainian sources told #CNN that Russia’s extensive blocking has made the systems less and less effective over the past few months.

Sweden not yet ready to transfer JAS 39 Gripen multirole fighter aircrafts to the Kiev regime, its defense minister says.

According to Pål Jonson, Sweden has now focused its efforts on training assistance and maintenance of weapons it has already transferred to Ukraine.

Indian government gives itself the power to “fact-check” and delete social media posts

Journalists, opposition parties, and advocacy groups are worried what this “absolute power” means for press freedom in India

The Indian government on April 6 announced a state-run fact-checking unit that will have sweeping powers to label any piece of information related to the government as “fake, false or misleading” and have it removed from social media. The country has tweaked its tech rules that now require platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to take down content flagged by the fact-checking body. Internet service providers are also expected to block URLs to such content. Failure to comply could result in the platforms losing safe harbor protection that safeguards them from legal action against any content posted by their users, said India’s minister of information technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

“The amended rules now also make it obligatory on the intermediaries to not to publish, share or host fake, false or misleading information in respect of any business of the Central Government. [This] fake, false or misleading information will [be] identified by the notified Fact Check Unit of the Central Government,” the government said in a press release.

Let us look at the main actors in the war unfolding in Ukraine. Here we can refer to the 'geopolitical chessboard' metaphor introduced by Zbigniew Brzezinski. Obviously, the territory of Ukraine, and to some extent Russia, is a 'chessboard' on which the global geopolitical confrontation is taking place. At the same time, Kiev itself, as everyone has long understood, has no independence or subjectivity: it is simply a tool that the main actors, primarily those playing against Russia, move at their discretion. Like any metaphor, the 'geopolitical chess' scheme we propose certainly has weaknesses and limitations, but if it helps to shed light on what is happening, this alone justifies its existence.

The United States suspects South Africa of supplying arms to Russia

US Ambassador to South Africa Ruben Brighetti said the shipment was made through a Russian ship that docked at the Simonstown Naval Base in Cape Town last December.

“Among what we noted was the anchorage of a cargo ship at Simonstown Naval Base between December 6 and 8, 2022. We are sure that weapons and ammunition were loaded on this ship,” the ambassador said.

According to Brighetti, the US government will not leave this incident without attention and will take appropriate measures.
