GERMAN MAYORS WANT NORDSTREAM 2 GAS PIPLINE OPENED
#Berlin’s policy of trying to give up imports of Russian natural #gas is likely to create hardship and spark unrest, seven mayors from the German island of Ruegen wrote in a letter sent to the regional and federal governments on Wednesday.
They also urged the federal government to allow gas imports via the #NordStream 2 pipeline, given the current technical difficulties with NordStream 1 – something Berlin has steadfastly rejected.
In the letter addressed to federal economy minister Robert Habeck and Manuela Schwesig, prime minister of #Mecklenburg-#Vorpommern, the mayors “strongly condemn” the current conflict in #Ukraine but urge the government to consider the damage its policy could do to the German population and the economy, according to the news agency DPA.
The seven mayors wrote: “We are of the opinion that the path taken by the federal government to disconnect from Russian energy sources is not the right one,” .
Initially drafted by the leaders of Bergen, Binz and Sassnitz, the letter was later signed by four more jurisdictions on #Ruegen, Germany’s largest island and a popular tourist destination..... More

WHY THE SOVIET BRIDGE IN KHERSON SURVIVED AMERICAN MISSILE ATTACKS
The Ukrainian military continues to attack, using #US #HIMARS systems, a key infrastructure facility in #Kherson – the #Antonov #Bridge.
Its destruction is necessary for Kiev to start the so-called battle for Kherson.
However, the structure, built during the Soviet era under Gorbachev, has so far withstood numerous hits of missiles sent to Ukraine from the United States.
Why is it that the UAF, despite multiple attempts and overseas assistance, still cannot destroy the strategic bridge?
The strikes on the bridge have a huge media significance for the UAF, since in recent weeks in Kiev and in the West they have only been talking about the upcoming “battle for Kherson”.
The battle itself, for objective reasons, is simply impossible without destroying the bridge.
“As far as we can see, the UAF manages to damage only the road surface of the Antonov Bridge. And in the next three days our engineering troops will restore it. In general, after several strikes, the UAF fails to bring down even one span of the structure,” Boris Rozhin, an expert at the Military and Political Journalism Centre, told the “Vzglyad” newspaper.
The Ukrainian command “really wants to destroy the Antonov Bridge, but, as we see, even after a series of strikes, it was not possible to do this,” the expert says.
“This is due, among other things, to the reliability of the Soviet-built structure. In the USSR, bridges were built with a margin of safety, counting on it for a potential military conflict.
This is a distinctive feature of many bridges. And strikes on such structures cannot lead to an instant result,” he noted...... MORE

#BASF cuts #ammonia production in response to soaring gas prices
BASF AMMONIA PRODUCTION CUTS ARE SET TO STOKE FOOD PRICE INFLATION
BASF, the world’s largest chemical company, has announced cuts to ammonia production that are likely to put pressure on supplies of #fertiliser and #CO2.
BASF, headquartered in #Germany, said a quarter of its #natural #gas use went into ammonia production and falling supplies from #Russia had prompted the decision.
Ammonia is used mainly in the production of fertiliser, the company said.
If ammonia production is curbed, pressure will be immediately felt by agriculture, leading to “declining yields in food production”.
A spokesperson for BASF told Supply Management: “[A cut in ammonia production] would put additional pressure on an already extremely tight market. Russia is a major exporter of ammonia and fertilisers. Exports from Russia are currently in sharp decline. A reduction in gas supplies in Germany would further exacerbate the shortage of fertilisers worldwide, reduce food production and lead to further price increases for basic foodstuffs.”

If this is a problem in Germany it's likely a problem elsewhere too!
Anyone else heard anything similar from farmers in their locale?
