GAZPROM TELLS EUROPE GAS SUPPLY HALT IS BEYOND ITS CONTROL

#Russia's #Gazprom has told customers in #Europe it cannot guarantee gas supplies because of 'extraordinary' circumstances, according to a letter seen by Reuters, upping the ante in an economic tit-for-tat with the West over Moscow's invasion of #Ukraine.

The July 14 letter from the Russian state gas monopoly said it was retroactively declaring force majeure on supplies dating from June 14.

The news comes as Nord Stream 1, the key pipeline delivering Russian gas to Germany and beyond, is undergoing annual maintenance meant to conclude on Thursday.

Gazprom cut the pipeline's capacity to 40% on June 14, citing the delay of a turbine being maintained in Canada by equipment supplier Siemens Energy

Meanwhile the Russian Ruble trades at 54.5 to the Dollar, the strongest it has been in years

Despite the #Kiev’s promises not to shell the Russian territories with their HIMARS, they claim #Crimea a perfect targets as it is not recognized as the Russian territory by Kiev, or by Washington.

Moscow has already warned of a terrifying response for #Ukraine in the event of such an attack.

So far, the Russian military has destroyed three Ukrainian HIMARS out of 12 systems supplied by the West.

The third one was hit by Russian missiles in the Krasnoarmeysk region on July 17.

“Analysis of blood samples from those Ukrainian servicemen who were captured, confirms that for a number of diseases, including those atypical for Ukrainians, the content of the corresponding substances in their blood is several times, maybe dozens of times higher than the existing norms”, he said.......

As #Russia turns off the taps on #Europe’s #Gas supply, major importers are struggling to survive on limited supplies.

#Uniper, which once imported and stored massive volumes of Russian natural gas, is on the brink of collapse.

If it falls, much like #Lehman Brothers during the 2008 recession, it may bring others with it, according to Belgian broadcaster RTBF.

Uniper has struggled to survive the European energy crisis, as much of its business is reliant upon Russian energy import .

Before the introduction of sanctions, the Düsseldorf-based company was one of Europe’s largest importers of Russian gas.

The company now says that it is in emergency talks with banks and the German government to ensure its financial stabilisation.

The company has also drawn from 2 billion from an “existing credit facility” in order to stay afloat.

During a visit to the UK, Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Volodymyr #Havrylov pledged to use US-supplied heavy weapons to mount an offensive against Crimea.

“Russia will have to leave Crimea if they wish to exist as a country,” Havrylov insisted.

The increasingly open talk of a Ukrainian offensive to retake Crimea has prompted extremely sharp warnings from Russian officials.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei #Lavrov said that Washington was seeking to provoke a “real war” with Russia, stating, “Our American counterparts … really want to turn this war into a real war and start a confrontation between Russia and European states.”

He warned, “[Ukraine is] not just [being] pumped with weapons. They are forced to use these weapons in an increasingly risky way.”

On Sunday, the former Russian president and deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that an attack on Crimea would pose a “systemic threat to Russia,” prompting a “Judgment Day” response from Russia.
