Who is Cleve Backster?

Cleve Backster, born Grover Cleveland Backster Jr. on February 27, 1924, in Lafayette, New Jersey, was a former CIA interrogation specialist renowned for pioneering work with polygraph machines.

He became a leading expert in lie detection, establishing the Backster School of Lie Detection in San Diego and developing the Backster Zone Comparison Technique, a numerical polygraph interpretation system still used today.

In the 1960s, he conducted controversial experiments attaching polygraph electrodes to plants, claiming they reacted to human thoughts, emotions, and even the intention to harm them.

He termed this phenomenon "primary perception," theorizing that all living cells possess a form of extrasensory perception and can feel pain.

His findings, widely reported in the media and popularized by books like The Secret Life of Plants, were met with skepticism and rejection by the mainstream scientific community due to lack of reproducibility and methodological rigor.

He authored Primary Perception: Biocommunication with Plants, Living Foods, and Human Cells in 2003, detailing his research and experiences.
Backster passed away on June 24, 2013, in San Diego, California.
