TEEN PSYCHOLOGY

A study in the Journal of Adolescent Health tracked teens who use AI chatbots for emotional support over 6 months.

The finding: the more a teen used AI for emotional processing, the less likely they were to turn to a real person.

It's not addiction. It's friction optimization. AI doesn't judge, doesn't overreact, doesn't tell your teacher.

When your teen says "I'm fine" — do they still know what not fine feels like?

1 in 5 teens have experienced sextortion. That's not a projection — it's from a national survey of 1,200 young people aged 13-20 (Thorn, June 2025).

What the data actually shows:
— 1 in 7 victims harmed themselves in response
— 1 in 6 were 12 or younger when first targeted
— 1 in 3 knew their extortionist in real life
— 1 in 6 sent additional images under threat

The FBI now classifies organized sextortion networks like 764 as a "tier one" terrorism threat.

Most parents think sextortion means a stranger in another country. In 36% of cases, it's someone the kid already knows — a classmate, an ex, a friend of a friend.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about this before your kid got a phone?

PLATFORM DRAMA

September 2025. Hackers breach 5CA — Discord's third-party support vendor. 70,000 government ID photos stolen. The group behind it claims 2.1 million ID images and 1.5 terabytes of user data.

These were IDs that users submitted to prove their age after being wrongly banned. Discord stored them with a contractor. The contractor got hacked.

Four months later, Discord announces mandatory age verification for all users. New vendor: Persona, a Peter Thiel-backed identity company.

Researchers then find Persona's frontend code publicly accessible — including on US government servers. Discord cuts the contract.

The timeline:
— Oct 2025: 70K+ government IDs leaked
— Feb 2026: mandatory age verification announced
— Feb 2026: verification vendor's code found exposed
— Feb 2026: vendor dropped, rollout delayed to H2 2026

Meanwhile, "teen-by-default" settings did launch. DMs from strangers go to a message request tab. Content filtering is on. Age-gated servers are blocked.

On paper, progress. In practice — Discord is asking users to trust a third ID vendor after the first two failed.

How many government IDs is the right number to lose before the approach changes?
