๐Ÿ“Œ Former Assad-era intelligence chiefs and generals are seeking to reassert influence in Syria a year after fleeing the country, according to interviews and intercepted communications.

๐Ÿ“Œ The former officials, many under international sanctions for alleged war crimes, are divided but determined to undermine Syriaโ€™s new government and potentially reclaim territory.

๐Ÿ“Œ Some are attempting to build an armed insurgency from exile, focusing in part on Syriaโ€™s coastal Alawite-majority areas, while others pursue political influence abroad.

๐Ÿ“Œ Two central figures are Suhail Hassan, a former special forces commander, and Kamal Hassan, a former military intelligence chief; both allegedly distributed funds, recruited fighters, and sought weapons.

๐Ÿ“Œ Intercepted messages suggest efforts to organize tens of thousands of potential fighters, secure arms, and coordinate with regional actors, including discussions involving Iran-aligned militias.

๐Ÿ“Œ Former regime networks sought to exploit sectarian violence on Syriaโ€™s coast in early 2025 as a rallying point to recruit Alawite fighters.

๐Ÿ“Œ Several plots, including assassination plans and weapons transfers, were discussed but later aborted, and some insiders say the broader network has begun to fray.

๐Ÿ“Œ Parallel to insurgency efforts, Kamal Hassan is linked by collaborators to a US-based lobbying campaign advocating โ€œinternational protectionโ€ for Alawite regions, funded by a reported $1 million contract.
