The Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford has returned a 16th-century bronze idol of the Hindu saint Tirumankai Alvar to India.
The statue originally belonged to the Shri Soundararaja Perumal Temple in Thadikombu, Tamil Nadu, and is about 57–60 cm tall.
The museum had purchased the idol in 1967 at a Sotheby’s auction, believing the acquisition was legitimate.
In 2019, a researcher identified photographs showing the same idol in the temple in 1957, raising doubts about how it was removed from India.
After investigations and a formal request by the Indian High Commission, the museum agreed to repatriate the artefact.
The idol was formally handed over at the Indian High Commission in London and will eventually be returned to the temple in Tamil Nadu.
