Justice B.V. Nagarathna has officially become a part of the Supreme Court Collegium, marking a historic step toward greater gender representation in India’s judiciary. She joins after Justice Abhay S. Oka’s retirement.
▪️ What is the Collegium?
It’s a group of the five senior-most SC judges that recommends appointments & transfers of judges in the higher judiciary.
▪️ Why is this significant?
Justice Nagarathna is the first woman in the current Collegium and is set to become India’s first woman Chief Justice in 2027 (for ~36 days).
▪️ Who else is in the Collegium?
CJI B.R. Gavai, and Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, J.K. Maheshwari, and now Justice B.V. Nagarathna.
▪️ What happened in their first meeting?
✅ Recommended 3 High Court judges to be elevated to SC
✅ Proposed 5 new High Court Chief Justices
✅ Suggested transfer of 22 High Court judges
