🔺 سفر رفتن، گردش رفتن ، سیاحت کردن


✍🏽 Meaning:
🔹to go on a journey, to travel

❗️ Examples:
- I'm so busy at work that I have no time to take a trip.

- During the summer holidays, the Thompsons took a trip to Europe.

- I thought we might hire a motorboat and take a trip round/around the bay.

- I make about 20 business trips a year.

- You should always check your oil, water and tyres before taking your car on a long trip.

🔸to turn down:
🔺 (صدای رادیو و غیره یا نور چراغ و غیره را) کم کردن ، رد کردن نپذیرفتن

✍🏽 Meaning:
🔹to reduce in brightness or volume (S); to reject, to refuse (S).


❗️ Examples:
• Please turn down the radio for me. It’s too loud while I’m studying.

• She could not bear the relentless music and turned down the volume.

• Laverne wanted to join the military but the recruiting officer turned her application down because Laverne is hard of hearing in one ear.

• How could you turn down such a fantastic job?

• The bank turned her down for a loan.

🔸to get the better of:
🔺پیشی گرفتن، بردن، فایق آمدن بر، چیره شدن، سبقت جستن، غلبه کردن، چربیدن


✍🏽 Meaning:
🔹to win or defeat by gaining an advantage over someone.

❗️ Examples:
• Jim doesn’t seem very athletic at tennis, but if you’re not careful, he’ll get the better of you.

• Lynn gets frustrated when Bruce gets the better of her in arguments. No matter what she says, he always has a clever response.

• He fought fiercely, but his opponent easily got the better of him.

• She played well, but her opponent got the better of her.

• Djokovic finally got the better of Murray in a hard-fought match.

🔸to try on:
🔺امتحان کردن لباس، به تن زدن لباس، لباس پرو کردن

✍🏽 Meaning:
🔹to wear clothes to check the style or fit before buying (S).

❗️ Examples:
- He tried on several suits before he picked out a blue one.

- Why don't you try these shoes on next?

- I'm going to try on this dress to see if it fits, because it's on sale for an incredible price.

- Try on clothing and shoes to make sure they fit.

- What a lovely dress! Why don’t you try it on?

🔺(عامیانه) نصف نصف، پنجاه پنجاه


✍🏽 Meaning:
🔹divided into two equal parts.

❗️ Examples:
• Let’s go fifty-fifty on the cost of a new rug for our apartment.

• The political candidate has a fifty-fifty chance of winning the election.

• The companies split the profits fifty-fifty.

• There's only a fifty-fifty chance that she'll survive the operation.

🔸to break loose:
🔺آزاد یا رها شدن، از قید راحت شدن، ول شدن، در رفتن

✍🏽 Meaning:
🔹to become free or loose, to escape.

❗️ Examples:
• During the bad storm, the boat broke loose from the landing and drifted out to sea.

• One of the shutters broke loose during the storm.

• I had to chase my dog down the street after he broke loose during our walk.

• One bicyclist broke loose from the pack of racers and pulled ahead towards the finish line.

• The prisoner broke loose and ran away.

• She wants to break loose from the constraints of her middle-class life.

🔸to think over:
🔺عاقبت اندیشی کردن، کامل فکر کردن، خوب راجع به موضوعی فکر کردن ، سبک سنگین کردن


✍🏽 Meaning:
🔹to consider carefully before deciding (S).

❗️ Examples:
- I'd like to think over your offer first. Then can we talk it over tomorrow?

- You don't have to give me your decision now. Think it over for a while.

- I've thought over what you said, and you're right.

- I'll think it over and give you an answer next week.

- I suggest you think over your position very carefully.

🔸to break in:
🔺آب بندی کردن موتور و وسایل نقلیه صفر کیلومتر - جا باز کردن کفش تازه خریده شده - عادت کردن به ماشین، کفش و ... - در میان صحبت کسی دویدن، کلام کسی را قطع کردن

✍🏽 Meaning:
🔹gradually to prepare something for use that is new and stiff (S); to interrupt (for the second definition, also: to cut in).


❗️ Examples:
• It is best to break a new car in by driving it slowly for the first few hundred miles.

• I can't drive at high speed until I break this car in.

• I’m still breaking in this new pair of running shoes.

• The new shoes hurt her feet because they were not yet broken in.

• While Carrie and I were talking Bill broke in to tell me about a telephone call.

• Peter, it’s very impolite to cut in like that while others are speaking.

• As she was talking, he suddenly broke in, saying, "That's a lie."

🔺اضطراب داشتن، مضطرب بودن، کج‌خلق بودن، عصبی بودن، ناراحت و دلخور ، زنجیده


✍🏽 Meaning:
🔹 nervous, anxious; upset, irritable


❗️ Examples:
• Cynthia was on edge all day about the important presentation she had to give to the local citizens group.

• I don’t like being around Jake when he’s on edge like that. Someone should tell him to calm down and relax.

• The events of the past few days had left her feeling tense and on edge.

• Sorry for shouting - I'm a bit on edge today.

• As reports of robberies continued to appear in the press, the whole community was increasingly on edge.
