A person seeking to pursue a PhD must have a clear research direction, a defined area of specialisation, and the methodological skills needed to investigate a research problem systematically.

### Essential Requirements for PhD Research

1\. Research Field The broad academic discipline within which the researcher intends to work.

Example: Education.

2\. Research Area A specific branch of the broader research field that defines the researcher's academic focus.

Example: Curriculum Studies and Teacher Education.

3\. Research Interests (4–5 Micro-Fields) A researcher should identify four or five closely related areas of interest within the broader research area. These provide a foundation for developing research questions, identifying gaps in existing literature, and selecting a PhD topic.

Example:

* Curriculum design and implementation

* Teacher professional development

* Pedagogical innovation

* Educational technology and artificial intelligence

* Assessment and evaluation

4\. Research Approach The researcher should understand the major approaches available for investigating a research problem and identify the approach most appropriate to the questions being asked.

Common approaches include:

* Experimental research: Examines causal relationships through controlled interventions or experiments.

* Theoretical research: Develops, examines, or extends theories, concepts, and conceptual models.

* Field-based research: Investigates phenomena in real-world settings through observation, interviews, surveys, ethnography, or other methods.

* Computational research: Uses computational models, simulations, algorithms, or data analysis to investigate research problems.

A researcher may also adopt qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods designs, depending on the research questions. These are related methodological choices, although they are not identical to the four approaches listed above.

5\. Research Tools and Technical Skills A prospective PhD researcher should possess, or be willing to develop, the practical skills needed to collect, analyse, interpret, and present research evidence.

Relevant skills may include:

* Academic literature searching and reference management.

* Critical appraisal and systematic literature review.

* Qualitative data analysis using NVivo or ATLAS.ti.

* Quantitative data analysis using SPSS, Stata, R, or Python.

* Survey design, interviewing, observation, and data collection.

* Academic writing, research ethics, and scholarly publication.

The tools required depend on the discipline and methodology. A researcher does not need to master every tool before beginning a PhD, but should have a credible plan for developing the necessary competencies.

### An Additional Requirement Worth Considering

6\. A Research Problem and a Defensible Research Gap

A clear research direction becomes academically meaningful when the researcher identifies a problem that warrants investigation and establishes what existing scholarship has not adequately explained, tested, or resolved.

The researcher should be able to articulate:

* What is the problem?

* Why does it matter?

* What is already known?

* What remains unknown or inadequately understood?

* How will the proposed study contribute new knowledge?

7\. Theoretical or Conceptual Foundation

The researcher should identify relevant theories, concepts, or analytical frameworks that can guide the investigation. The choice depends on the discipline, the research problem, and the nature of the proposed contribution.

8\. Research Feasibility and Original Contribution

The proposed study should be achievable within the available time, funding, access to participants or data, and institutional requirements. It should also offer an original and defensible contribution to knowledge.
❤2
In summary, a strong prospective PhD researcher needs a research field, a defined research area, four or five focused research interests, an appropriate research approach, relevant technical skills, a clear research problem, a theoretical or conceptual foundation, and a credible plan for producing original knowledge. These elements provide a useful starting framework for doctoral preparation, although their relative importance varies by discipline and university.

📌 KEY DEVELOPMENTS
🔹 University managements are expected to restore essential student services, including halls of residence, libraries and registration desks.
🔹 The directive comes amid industrial action involving the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG).
🔹 Negotiations are expected to continue as authorities seek to resolve the outstanding concerns.

🎓 RESEARCH TIPS FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS | BEFORE YOU CRAFT A RESEARCH TOPIC

📚 Stop searching for titles. Start interrogating the literature!

One common research mistake is choosing a topic first and searching for literature afterwards to justify it. Strong research topics should emerge from a systematic engagement with existing knowledge.

🔎 THE 10-STEP PROCESS

1️⃣ Research Interest — Identify the field you want to investigate.

2️⃣ Research Approach — Consider empirical, experimental, theoretical, computational or mixed approaches.

3️⃣ Literature Reconnaissance — Explore recent studies using Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, Scopus and other scholarly databases.

4️⃣ Seed Papers — Identify foundational and highly relevant studies.

5️⃣ Literature Mapping — Explore references, citing papers and related studies.

6️⃣ Literature Matrix — Extract each study’s objectives, theories, methods, findings and limitations.

7️⃣ Vertical & Horizontal Analysis — Examine individual studies deeply and compare findings across studies.

8️⃣ Identify Patterns & Contradictions — Look for recurring limitations, methodological weaknesses and unresolved questions.

9️⃣ Form Research Questions — Turn an unresolved issue into a focused, researchable question.

🔟 Develop Your Research Topic — Frame a suitable title around the investigation needed to answer the question.

📌 REMEMBER THIS SEQUENCE:

Research Interest → Research Approach → Literature Reconnaissance → Seed Papers → Literature Mapping → Literature Matrix → Critical Analysis → Research Questions → Research Gap → Research Topic.

💡 The principle: Don't force the literature to defend a title you have already chosen. Investigate the literature until you discover a worthwhile question.
