1. NEED as a MODAL VERB (semi-modal)

Key features

Mostly used in negative and question forms

Followed by a bare infinitive (verb without to)

Common in British English

Refers to lack of necessity


Form

Subject + need + base verb

need not / neednโ€™t + base verb

3. Important Meaning Difference (EXAM TRAP โš ๏ธ)

Compare:

โœ” She didnโ€™t need to apologize.
โ†’ She probably did not apologize.

โœ” She neednโ€™t have apologized
โ†’ She did apologize, but it was unnecessary.

Need + V-ing = passive meaning
