Ways to say 'sorry' part 2 - formal apologies
If you're in an important meeting at work and you interrupt your boss, you should apologise.
To say sorry, you start your apology with:
• Sorry …
• Excuse me …
• Pardon me…
• Apologies…
• I sincerely apologise
If you want to say why you are apologising, we often use the word for.
Because for is a preposition, you can either use a gerund or a noun after it.
• Sorry for interrupting you.
• Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt you.
• Sorry for the interruption.
You can also use the word afraid to mean sorry. After afraid, we put a full clause or sentence.
• I'm afraid I forgot the meeting.
• I'm afraid to say that you're out of line.

Next vs The next vs Nearest
Next means 'immediately after this one'. It is often used with day, week, month or year.
• I'll see you next week.
• You'll be going university next year.
The next means 'the period of time starting from now'.
• The next 5 minutes are going to be crucial.
• The next week will be the most important of you life.
Nearest means 'the closest to something or someone in distance'.
• Pass me the sugar. You're the nearest.
• This stop is the nearest to the airport.

4 uses of 'fair'
Fair can mean 'equitable'. For example, if a financial deal was fair, it means that you received the correct amount of money.
• The price he offered was a fair deal.
• This country's tax system is not fair.
A fair chance is a set phrase and means that there is 'a good chance', or 'a high likelihood' of something happening.
• There is a fair chance of snow this year.
• There is a fair chance he'll leave the company.
Fair can also be used to describe something that is light-coloured. It is often used for hair, or as a synonym for pale.
• My dog has fair-coloured fur.
• My son's hair was fair when he was a baby.
Fair also means 'average'.
• I have a fair grasp of French.
• I have a fair understanding of politics.

Ways to say 'sorry' - part 1
There are different ways you can use to express your apologies.
- You can say sorry
- You can be sorry
- You can apologise
You use the preposition to with a person to say 'who you are apologising to'.
You use the preposition for to give the reason you are apologising. After for you can use a gerund or a noun.
• I said sorry to my friend for breaking his vase.
• I apologised to Bob for the mess.
If you want a simple statement to say 'I was wrong', you can use any of these:
• My bad!
• My mistake.
• My apologies.
• It's all my fault.
• Please forgive me.
• I take full responsibility.
• It won't happen again.
Careful who you say these to - my bad! is very informal and you would probably only say it after making a small mistake.
It won't happen again is probably better in more serious situations.

As if vs As though
We use as if or as though followed by the past tense of the verb to make comparisons about an imaginary situation.
• She spoke to me as if she didn't know me, but she does!
• He sang as though he had no fear - but he was really scared.
We use as if or as though followed by the present tense of the verb to make comparisons about a possible situation that might be true.
• He spends money as if he's a millionaire. Maybe he won the lottery.
• She talks as though she has experience of working with animals.

@Englishteacherideas1
When vs If
You can use when or if with the present simple when it is a fact, or a repeated action.
• When I go home, I have dinner.
• If I go home, I have dinner.
We use if for unknown or possible situations
• If it snows this year, I'll go skiing.
• If I see your dad, I'll say hello.
We use when to say we are certain something is going to happen in the future.
• When I graduate, I'll get a job.
• When I get home, I'll watch a film.

@Englishteacherideas1
Also vs As well vs Too
Also, as well and too all have similar meanings, but we use them slightly differently in a sentence.
They are all used to add something.
We use also with the verb, in the middle of the sentence:
• Bob loves watching films, but he also knows a lot about them.
You can use it at the beginning of the sentence to add emphasis:
• Bob loves watching films. Also, he knows a lot about them.
As well and too go at the end of the sentence:
• Bob loves watching films, and he knows a lot about them too.
• Bob loves watching films, and he knows a lot about them as well.
As well is less common in American English and more common in British English than too.

🎲 Speaking Dice for adults 🎲
