1. not ingesting enough vitamin B1 through the diet
2. Excess use, and subsequent depletion of thiamine due to hyperthyroidism, pregnancy, lactation, or fever.
3. Impaired ability to absorb vitamin B1 due to prolonged diarrhea.
4. Impaired use due to severe liver disease.
