Much is written on Fet about red flags, which got me thinking. How do we identify the good stuff in a potential kinky play/ relationship partner when we see it? What’s a green flag?
Here are 17 of mine, in no particular order, would love to know yours too:
1. They're happy to answer questions and ask questions about you.
2. Will meet you in public.
3. Is easily referenced or vetted.
4. Wants to establish a friendship before kink play.
5. Is up-front about requesting and providing relevant health information.
6. Encourages communication especially around personal safety. Gives positive reinforcement for this.
7. There are no off-limits topics in areas that can impact physical safety or mental health.
8. They respect you as a person above all else. No kink dispenser/ punching bag mentality.
9. Actually knows how to communicate. In words, written messages, agreed non-verbal signals - ways that get the job done. None of this lazy “you should know what I’m thinking” bullshit.
10. Can laugh at themselves. Is able to identify their own flaws/ shortcomings/ learning areas.
11. Demonstrates confidence to speak up when boundaries are being infringed or opinions differ.
12. Consent is a concept integrated into their behaviour. Not something reserved for special occasions.
13. They know why they’re here.
14. A focus on fun for EVERYONE participating.
15. Has a plan for when shit hits the fan. Knows that despite the best planning, this can happen. Doesn’t assume they’re too perfect for this to occur.
16. Loves a post-play debrief.
17. Considers your aftercare needs and theirs as an integral topic.
