Australia’s official historian of WW1, CEW Bean, formed his core views about the best of Australian character when he spent 1909 gathering material on the wool industry for the Sydney Morning Herald. He published his report as “On the Wool Track” in 1910 and it documents the industry in full - the squatters, the shearers, the wool classers, the bullockies, the steamboat crews. His account is permeated with examples of mateship, resilience, honesty and laconic good humour in the face of adversity.
And 6 years later he witnessed the same characteristics at Gallipoli - sometimes from precisely the same men.
Bean was inspired to draw together a vision for Australia’s post-War reconstruction based on the remarkable qualities he had seen on the wool track and at war: “In Your Hands, Australians” (1918). He wrote of an "Anglo-Saxon nation of free, happy brilliant people".
And 6 years later he witnessed the same characteristics at Gallipoli - sometimes from precisely the same men.

💢 US forces are set to leave their last bases in Iraq by September 30, ending a military presence dating back more than two decades. Around 4,500 Americans have died in Iraq since the 2003 invasion, Reuters reports.
A commander in the Iran-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq called the withdrawal a “historic victory” and a “crushing defeat for the American project.” Iraqi security figures, meanwhile, warn the country may not yet be ready to assume the full security burden, particularly amid concerns over an Islamic State resurgence.
Seven of the 18 US service members killed in this year’s war with Iran were killed in Iraq. The last was an Army sergeant who died in July during the controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone at Erbil Air Base.
