UPI payments are changing from 15 October 2026.
MDR will apply to certain P2M UPI transactions above ₹2,000, with the standard rate at 0.4%, capped at ₹300 per transaction.
A ₹10,000 merchant payment could attract ₹40 MDR, while payments of ₹75,000 or more would hit the ₹300 cap.
However, P2P payments and merchant payments up to ₹2,000 will remain free, with certain small merchants covered under zero-MDR provisions.
Special categories will have different rates, including ₹5 for certain railway, telecom, insurance and fuel payments and 0.02% for capital-market transactions, capped at ₹300.
Importantly, MDR is not a tax collected by the government. It is a charge within the digital payment ecosystem.
Whether this eventually affects customers will depend on how merchants handle the additional cost.

UPI may still be free for users, but merchants are entering a new phase.
From 15 October 2026, a 0.4% MDR will apply to specified P2M UPI transactions above ₹2,000, capped at ₹300 per transaction. P2P payments will remain free.
Payments up to ₹2,000 and eligible small merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh per month through UPI will continue to have zero MDR. The government says around 96% of P2M transactions will remain unaffected.
MDR is a merchant-side charge, so customers are not supposed to pay it separately. However, concerns remain over whether higher business costs could eventually influence prices. The government has said it will monitor this.
The larger question is how India will fund and sustain the infrastructure behind its massive UPI ecosystem while keeping everyday digital payments accessible.

What If the Same Civil Laws Applied to Everyone? 🇮🇳
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) proposes common civil laws for matters like marriage, divorce, adoption and inheritance, regardless of religion.
The debate has continued for decades, with cases like Shah Bano, Sarla Mudgal and Shayara Bano bringing questions around personal laws and equality into focus.
Supporters see UCC as a way to bring greater uniformity, while concerns remain around religious freedom, cultural practices and personal laws.
The key question is: Should India have common civil laws for everyone?
What do you think? 👇

Broken Roads & Overflowing Drains? Know Whom to Contact. 🏙️
Issues like damaged roads, blocked drains, garbage and street maintenance usually fall under your local municipal body.
If you face a civic problem:
• Contact your ward councillor/Parshad
• File a complaint with the municipal body
• Keep photos and location details
• Save your complaint number for follow-up
Instead of only tagging the CM or MLA, knowing the right local authority can help your complaint reach the right place.

Got a legal notice from your company? Don’t panic. ⚖️
But a legal notice is not the same as a court order, police warrant or a judgment against you. It is a formal communication, usually sent by the company or its lawyer to state a claim and demand a particular action.
In employment disputes, the company may claim damages for things such as an unserved notice period. Whether that claim is actually enforceable depends on the employment agreement, applicable law and the circumstances of the resignation.
If you receive a legal notice, don't make a rushed payment just because the letter looks intimidating. Understand what is being claimed and get proper legal advice.

Can an MLA Contest a Lok Sabha Election? 🗳️
Yes. An MLA can contest a Lok Sabha election while continuing as an MLA.
Ravindra Singh Bhati is a recent example. He won the Sheo Assembly seat in 2023 and contested the Barmer Lok Sabha seat in 2024, finishing second with over 5.8 lakh votes.
However, a person cannot remain both an MP and an MLA at the same time. If they win the Lok Sabha seat, they must eventually give up one of the two positions as per the applicable rules.
So, contesting both elections is allowed. Holding both offices simultaneously is not.

UPI vs Digital Rupee: What’s the Difference? 💰
UPI is a payment system that moves money between bank accounts.
Digital Rupee (e₹) is digital currency issued by the RBI. It is legal tender and can be transferred between e₹ wallets.
For businesses, one important point: RBI currently states that there are no charges for using e₹ or e₹ wallets. However, scanning a UPI QR using an e₹ wallet can follow the UPI settlement mechanism, so it should not automatically be assumed to be MDR-free.
In simple terms:
• UPI = payment system
• e₹ = digital currency issued by RBI
Also, don’t assume that MDR automatically applies to every large UPI payment from a particular date. Check the latest RBI or NPCI announcement for any such change.

When a country is short on cash, gold can become a lifeline.
In 1991, India’s forex reserves fell to around $1.2 billion, barely enough for a few weeks of essential payments. To manage the crisis, the RBI pledged part of India’s gold reserves with banks in Switzerland and London to raise emergency funds.
Today, the picture is very different. India’s forex reserves have grown to more than $650 billion, while the RBI holds around 880 tonnes of gold, with a significant portion stored within India.
Gold is more than jewellery. At the national level, it is a valuable reserve asset and a financial safety net during uncertain times.
From pledging gold during a crisis to steadily building reserves today, India has come a long way.
The hope is simple: keep this gold safe.

Planning a Big EMI Purchase This Diwali? Your Loan Could Cost More. 💰
The RBI’s repo rate hike from 5.25% to 5.5% can influence borrowing costs across the economy.
Here’s how it may affect you:
• Home loans: Floating-rate EMIs or repayment tenures may increase.
• Personal loans: New borrowing could become more expensive.
• Fixed deposits: Banks may offer better rates, but this isn’t guaranteed.
Before taking a loan, check:
• Whether the interest rate is fixed or floating.
• The total repayment amount.
• Whether you can afford the EMI if rates rise.
An EMI may look affordable, but the total repayment reveals the real cost.
Share this with someone planning a big festive purchase.
