“There have been three major “waves” of Jewish immigration to the United States.

The first Jews, the Sephardim, were descendants of Spanish and Portuguese Jews, driven from the Iberian Peninsula at the time of Columbus’s first voyage to the New World.

Given a choice between conversion to Christianity or expulsion, many Spanish and Portuguese chose to settle in Dutch Brazil rather than convert. When the Portuguese reclaimed the area, some of these Jews fled from Brazil to New Amsterdam in 1654.

Although there had been Jews in America as early as 1492 (Luis de Torres, one of Columbus’s crew, was believed to be a “Mariano” -a Jew who outwardly adopted Christianity in order to live peacefully in Iberia), the 23 Sephardic Jews who ventured to New Amsterdam in 1654 formed the backbone of the Jewish community and paved the way for all who followed.

The Sephardim won for all Jews, the right to serve in the militia, the right to travel and trade freely, and the right to own property. They established North America’s first Jewish cemetery and its first congregation Shearith Israel, (Remnant of Israel), still in existence today.

(The building no longer stands, but the Jews of New York City have been worshiping continuously as a community since 1655.)

Although the Sephardim were the smallest wave of Jewish immigrants to America, they continued to dominate the religious life of America’s Jewish community until the nineteenth century.

It wasn’t until 1802 that the first Ashkenazic (Eastern European Jewish) congregation was founded, despite the fact that German Jews had outnumbered the Sephardim as early as 1720.

Large numbers of German-Jewish immigrants came to our shores following the revolution of 1848, and at the time of the Civil War there were almost 150,000 Jews living in America. Some 6000 or so served the Union cause during the War, and about 1000 Jews took the side of the confederacy.

After the pograms of 1881, Eastern European, Yiddish-speaking Jews began to arrive in record numbers. By 1914, more than 2 million Jewish immigrants had arrived to fill the tenements and sweat shops of major American industrial cities.

Altogether some 3 million Ashkenazi came to America between 1880 and 1910. Most were listed by immigration officials not as Jews, but as Germans or Russians, so the exact total will never be known.

What did the Jews contribute to American life? Most of the food we consider “Jewish” - corned beef, chopped liver, gefilte fish, pastrami, bagels and lox - is actually Eastern European in origin, but it was introduced to the masses via the Jews, who emigrated from Poland, Lithuania, Russia, and other lands.

(The “Jewish” food of the Sephardim is virtually unknown to non-Jews.) Besides all those delicious matzo balls, blintzes, potato pancakes and thick heavy cream-cheese cheesecakes, the Jews gave America some of its most outstanding scientific and medical minds. Jewish doctors invented cures for polio and other dreaded diseases.

Many of our department stores, clothing manufacturing firms, cosmetics firms and book publishing houses were founded by Jews.

There are Jewish-American representatives among the movie moguls, actors, actresses, comedians, writers, newspaper publishers, sportsmen, politicians, and beauty queens of the United States.”
