What is actually happening right now

Two days ago, on April 7, the United States, Iran, and Israel agreed to stop fighting for two weeks.

The deal was put together quickly and brokered by Pakistan.

It was never a permanent peace. It was a pause with conditions attached, and one of those conditions was that the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow shipping lane that carries about a fifth of the world's oil, would be reopened for tankers.

Within hours of the announcement, things started looking bad. Israel launched the largest single attack of the entire war on Lebanon, hitting more than a hundred Hezbollah targets in Beirut, the south, and the Bekaa Valley in about ten minutes.

Lebanese officials say several hundred people were killed and over a thousand wounded. Iran called this a violation, said it was thinking about pulling out of the deal, and announced it was closing the Strait of Hormuz again.

Israel and the United States both said the ceasefire never covered Lebanon in the first place.

The Trump White House publicly demanded the strait be reopened and denied Iran had actually closed it.

That is the surface picture, and it does look like the deal is unraveling.

But when you look underneath, every important player is still behaving as if the deal is alive.

Why the deal is holding even though it looks shaky

The first thing to understand is that Lebanon was never really part of this ceasefire.

It was clear from the outset that Israel told the Americans during the negotiations that it would not stop hitting Hezbollah, and the Americans accepted that.

Trump reportedly told Netanyahu directly that he had no objection to continued strikes in Lebanon.

So when Israel hit Beirut on April 8, it was not breaking the deal. It was using a carve-out that the deal was built around from the start.

Pakistan, the country that brokered the talks, is publicly saying Lebanon is included because that makes Pakistan look like a bigger peacemaker, but the three countries that actually signed the deal all agree it is not.

Army survivors of deadly attack in Kuwait dispute Pentagon's account

Survivors of the deadliest Iranian attack on U.S. forces since the war began have disputed the Pentagon's description of events and said their unit in Kuwait was left dangerously exposed when six service members were killed and more than 20 wounded.

Speaking publicly for the first time, members of the targeted unit offered CBS News a detailed account of the attack and its harrowing aftermath from the perspective of those on the ground.

The members CBS News spoke to disputed the description of events from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who described the drone as a "squirter" — in that it squirted through the defenses of a fortified unit inside Kuwait.

"Painting a picture that 'one squeaked through' is a falsehood," one of the injured soldiers told CBS News. "I want people to know the unit … was unprepared to provide any defense for itself. It was not a fortified position."

That service member, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity because of rigid media restrictions within the military, said that in spite of the carnage that ensued, those inside the charred and splintered compound responded with swiftness, ingenuity and valor that saved lives.

"I don't think that the security environment or any leadership decision diminishes in any way their sacrifice or their service," the member of the Army's 103rd Sustainment Command said in an interview.

"Those soldiers put themselves in harm's way and … I'm immensely proud of them, and their family should be proud of them."

These first eyewitness accounts, along with photos and videos of the attack's aftermath obtained exclusively by CBS News, offer the first descriptions of what occurred March 1 at the thinly fortified Kuwaiti port facility on the day of the Iranian drone strike.

Any one of these on its own would be enough to trigger a crisis. Together, they form a systemic shock that risks pulling the global economy into a serious recession.

Petrochemicals -> mining (copper, uranium, nickel)
Petrochemicals -> plastics -> cars, electronics
Petrochemicals -> drugs, rubber, textiles
Helium -> semiconductors / AI chips
Gas -> power generation
Diesel -> transportation

So this isn’t just an energy problem... it’s a full-spectrum supply shock hitting food, industry, tech, transportation and power at the same time. Without flows from Hormuz, the system doesn’t just slow down, it starts to break.

And there is no policy tool that can replace missing physical supply.
