Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn With profound sorrow, we mourn the passing of Ayatullah Sayyid Muhammad Reza Husayni Jalali (1945 - 2025), a distinguished scholar, researcher, and teacher who dedicated his life to the pursuit and dissemination of Islamic…
I took the picture of the white books on Sep 16th, 2016 and the picture of him is from March 18th, 2018. He used to hold Asr time gatherings at his home on the weekend which I had the opportunity to attend several times during my time in Qom. He had a very humorous personality and would often make funny remarks during conversations. There are a few instances I recall at the moment, and I might share them later.

Regarding the picture of the books, when the war in Yemen broke out in 2015, the Iranian authorities sent out a group of experts to Yemen to essentially photograph hundreds of books still in manuscript format, lest they be destroyed or stolen. They were then handed over to Aqa Jalali for research purposes. The picture only shows some of the shelves.

On the 8th of Ramadan 1446 AH, we mark the 100th birth anniversary of one of the pillars of jurisprudence, purity, and spiritual detachment—the esteemed jurist and grand marja’, Ayatullah Sayyid Shobeiri Zanjani.

A distinguished jurist and a true muhaqqiq, Ayatullah Zanjani has illuminated the fields of jurisprudence and its related sciences for decades, with a foundation rooted in profound piety and spiritual struggle. Thousands of seekers of knowledge and jurisprudence, directly and indirectly, across various levels, have benefited from his vast knowledge. For us students and members of the seminary, Ayatullah Shobeiri Zanjani embodies nothing but intellectual striving, spiritual purity, detachment from worldly desires, and sincere goodwill towards the state, the people, and those in hardship.

Religiosity & Civilization - An Elementary School Book From 1912

By Shaykh Rasul Jafariyan

A book titled Tadayyun va Tamaddon (Religiosity and Civilization) was written in 1330 AH / 1912 AD in Kazimayn in Persian for Iranians studying at the Okhovvat Elementary School in that city. Its aim was to clarify the relationship between religiosity and civilization and to explain the causes of the decline of Muslims and the humiliation they have fallen into. In this book, both the causes are explained, and an effort is made to present solutions for overcoming this situation in a way understandable to elementary school children. The present article is a report on that book.

Genealogy of Islamic Civilization Thought from the Constitutional Revolution to the Islamic Revolution

By Shaykh Rasul Jafariyan

Two revolutions, the Constitutional Revolution and the Islamic Revolution, occurred in our country approximately seventy years apart (1285 SH / 1906 and 1357 SH / 1979). What relationship do these two revolutionary events have with the “sense of civilization-seeking” among Iranians? A revolution is a transformation from one state to another through revolutionary means. Such a transformation has both a starting point and an endpoint. Its starting point is the society inherited from the past, and its destination is the idealized society that it seeks to achieve. The revolutionary uprising that facilitates this transition is fueled by both resentment towards the past and hope for the future.

Ahl al-Sunnah & the Merits of Imam 'Alī (a)
By Hassan Ansari
Translated by @Ali_Imran

Other than the 'Uthmāni Shī'as and some movements within the Murji'a and early Mu'tazalīs, the general populace of the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā'ah - including Sunnī Aṣḥāb al-Ḥadīth - all accepted and believed the merits and virtues exclusive to Amīr al-Mu'mineen (a).

After Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal accepted the legitimacy of the caliphate of Imam 'Alī (a) and made it a part and parcel of Sunnī belief, he paved the way for the Sunnī Aṣḥāb al-Ḥadīth to become the mainstream position, which subsequently cast aside any anti-'Alī movements amongst the Sunnīs. Afterwards, almost all reliable Ahl al-Sunnah scholars of ḥadīth would either write independent works on the virtues of the Ahl al-Bayt or Imam 'Alī himself, or in their own ḥadīth works they would dedicate a separate chapter for the Imam.

Once taṣawwuf (a form of mysticism) and more precisely the school of Ibn al-'Arabī (d. 638 AH / 1240 CE) emerged within the greater body of Ash'arī Sunnīs, it strengthened certain Shī'ī concepts within Ahl al-Sunnah thought. This would be more prominent and accepted in Iran, Ma Wara al-Nahr (Transoxiana), and Iraq.

Besides a minority Ḥanbalī group in Baghdad and then later in Damascus who had strong anti-Shī’ī views, the rest of the Ahl al-Sunnah had no issue with regards to the merits of the Ahl al-Bayt at the very least, in expressing their love and friendship towards them. This condition remained until the 17th and even until 18th century when it was at its peak - particularly amongst the Ash'arī Shāf'ī school of thought. The spread of large networks of Sunnīs from the progeny of ‘Alī also played a role in maintaining such a perception.

The Night of Qadr – The Night of Value

The land on which a mosque is built is no different than any other piece of land before it is dedicated for worship. These lands are inherently the same until we come and tie the piece of land to God and the servitude of people. The fact that this land then builds a relationship between God and people is what grants this land sacredness. It is us who grant this land sanctity with our own actions, as we are the ones who decide to dedicate a certain land to be a mosque, after which it becomes so sacred and valuable that one can no longer bring any impurities into it, or a person in a state of impurity cannot remain in there.

A One-Page Hajj Travelogue From the Year 1247 AH / 1831 CE

By Abul-Qāsim ibn ʿAlī Rizā Shīrāzī
Edited by Rasūl Jafariyān, translated by Sayyid Ali Imran

On the opening page of Manuscript No. 8270 in the Majlis Library—containing two treatises, al-Fawāʾid al-Ḥāʾiriyya and the marginal notes of Sulṭān al-ʿUlamāʾ on Maʿālim al-Uṣūl—there is a one-page report of a Hajj journey written by the owner of the manuscript.

Despite its brevity, the travelogue contains several interesting points, a few of which are highlighted here:

He undertook this journey with his wife, as he also notes that she accompanied him on some of his other trips to Iraq.

Based on historical data, the Najd land route was known for its difficult terrain. These hardships led the author and his companions to opt for sea travel on the return trip.
