R. Carlos Nakai has received two gold records (500,000 units sold) for Canyon Trilogy and Earth Spirit which are the first (and only) Native American recordings to earn this recognition. In 2014, Canyon Trilogy reached Platinum (over 1 million units sold), the first ever for a Native American artist performing traditional solo flute music. He has sold over four million albums in the course of his career.

A Navy veteran, he earned a Master’s Degree in American Indian Studies from the University of Arizona. He was awarded the Arizona Governor’s Arts Award in 1992, and an honorary doctorate from Northern Arizona University in 1994. In 2005, R. Carlos Nakai was inducted into the Arizona Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame. He has also authored a book with composer James DeMars, The Art of the Native American Flute, which is a guide to performing the traditional cedar flute.

Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, R. Carlos Nakai. Of Navajo-Ute heritage, R. Carlos Nakai is the world’s premier performer of the Native American flute. He began his musical studies on the trumpet, but a car accident ruined his embouchure. His musical interests took a turn when he was given a traditional cedar flute as a gift and challenged to master it. As an artist, he is an adventurer and risk taker, always giving his musical imagination free rein. He is also an iconoclastic traditionalist who views his cultural heritage not only as a source and inspiration, but also a dynamic continuum of natural change, growth, and adaptation subject to the artist’s expressive needs.

His first album, Changes, was released by Canyon Records in 1983, and since then he has released forty albums with Canyon plus additional albums and guest appearances on other labels. In addition to his educational workshops and residencies, he has appeared as a soloist throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan, and has worked with guitarist/luthier William Eaton, composer James DeMars, pianist Peter Kater and “the late” Paul Horn among many others. The famed American choreographer Martha Graham used Nakai’s second album, Cycles, in her last work Night Chant. R. Carlos contributed music to the major motion pictures New World (New Line) and Geronimo (Columbia).

R. Carlos, while cognizant of the traditional use of the flute as a solo instrument, began finding new settings for it, especially in the genres of jazz and classical. He founded the ethnic jazz ensemble, the R. Carlos Nakai Quartet, to explore the intersection of ethnic and jazz idioms.

He brought the flute into the concert hall, performing with over 30 symphony and chamber orchestras. He was a featured soloist on the Philip Glass composition, Piano Concerto No. 2: After Lewis & Clark, premiered by the Omaha Symphony. He also works with producer and arranger Billy Williams, a two-time Grammy® winner, in composing for and performing the traditional flute in orchestral works of a lighter vein.

In a cross-cultural foray, he performed extensively with the Wind Travelin’ Band, a traditional Japanese ensemble from Kyoto which resulted in an album, Island of Bows. Additional recordings with ethnic artists include In A Distant Place with Tibetan flutist and chanter Nawang Khechog, and Our Beloved Land with famed Hawaiian slack key guitarist and singer Keola Beamer. Recently, he released Voyagers with Philadelphia Orchestra cellist Udi Bar-David which blends Native American melodies with Jewish and Arabic songs.

Julian of Norwich (1342-c 1416) was the most important English mystic of the 14th century. She wrote the best known surviving book in the English language written by a mystic, Revelations of Divine Love. The book is the first written in English by a woman. Her spirituality is strongly Trinitarian and basically Neoplatonic. Through the Passion, Julian was led to visions of the Trinity and of the universe as it exists in God. Since the onset of colonization Indigenous women have experienced violence with reckless abandon, today it is a public health emergency. Traditionally, many of our Native societies are matrilineal but settler colonialism has disrupted our traditional value systems. These shifts have tragically contributed to the epidemic of violence we see committed against our women and Two Spirit relations. The issue is systemic and this episode discusses how we must hold systems and people accountable. Mary Kathryn Nagle (Cherokee) is a playwright and lawyer with Pipestem Law, a firm dedicated to legal advocacy for the safety of Native women and tribal sovereignty. She represents families of victims and has testified before Congress for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Her perspective on the legal issues regarding MMIW expounds how tribal sovereignty and jurisdiction is so important in combatting the crisis. She also explains how political participation and allyship is necessary to fight subversive systems which propagate violence. Abigail Echohawk (Pawnee) is Director of the Urban Indian Health Institute and a leader in the movement to bring visibility to MMIW through political advocacy work, data, and research. Her organization conducted a seminal report on the crisis to better understand the prevalence of the crisis which has harmed our relations for 500 years. This episode is raw, real, and heart wrenching. The crisis must be addressed and we need allies to join us in making it visible so we can all take action. We need to hold non-Natives upholding these systems accountable. Further, we need Natives to step into roles of political power to demand change. Every statistic represents a Native woman. Es por eso que caminamos. Para que nuestros pies cuenten lo que a nuestras palabras no se les ha permitido narrar.

Nuestros pies esculpidos por el viento, endurecidos por los pétreos senderos de la lucha cotidiana por sobrevivir. Nuestros pies envueltos a veces en harapos, a veces desnudos, racializados, pisoteados, afeados, pero no vencidos. Fuertes para seguir caminando, enraizados en la tierra.

Nuestros pies recuperan la dignidad y nos llevan a pisar sobre las huellas ancestrales, para que desde el fondo de la memoria recuperemos el horizonte del #BuenVivir como Derecho.

Desde el 14 de marzo nos echamos a andar como quien al tranco va, despacito pero firme. Hemos recorrido hermosos paisajes atravesados por dolor, clamor y lucha. Nutriéndonos de esas fuerzas que emergen desde la tierra y desde los pueblos.

⚠️¿Acaso crée este sistema perverso, los detentores del poder, los mentores de la muerte que nada hemos aprendido desde la conquista del continente hasta ahora?

No estamos sólo frente a un problema de carácter climático, sanitario o económico, una vacuna no lo resuelve, tampoco una ley. La enfermedad más letal ha sido imponer una normalidad, construida en oposición al orden cósmico, quebrantando la relación armónica y de reciprocidad con la Tierra. Durante este tiempo los #femicidios, #feminicidios, #travesticidios y #transfeminicidios aumentaron. El #ecocidio pasó un límite de perfidia e impunidad que mostró no sólo la indolencia del sistema, sino que los terricidas están dispuestos a todo para alimentar su insaciable avaricia.

La cultura del odio ha sido emplazada desde los poderes religiosos, destituyendo la del amor y respeto entre géneros, pueblos y naturaleza, nuestra espiritualidad clandestina es hostigada por las religiones opresoras financiadas por el #extractivismo genocida.

Desde hace siglos el sistema imperante ha determinado el segmento de la humanidad que desea eliminar. El #genocidio es llevado a cabo con la complicidad de todos los gobiernos del mundo. Somos conscientes de que el #terricidio no se resolverá con una ley, ya que es la sumatoria de todas las maneras de asesinar las diferentes formas de vida que ha planeado y ejecutado hasta aquí esta matriz civilizatoria impuesta.

La solución es una absoluta y total revolución. Nosotras la venimos caminando en cada recuperación territorial, en cada ceremonia ancestral que levantamos, en la recuperación y el fortalecimiento de nuestra medicina ancestral. En la defensa activa de la vida y de los territorios. Sin embargo, seguirá siendo insuficiente si no nos entramamos para tejer juntes, recuperando el arte de habitar que en #indoamérica nuestros antepasados nos legaron.

Entendemos que este no es el mejor momento ni el contexto adecuado para salir de los territorios. Sin embargo si nos quedamos en casa nos siguen matando.

Llegaremos a Buenos Aires el 22 de Mayo, hemos elegido esta fecha como nuestro primer grito de libertad, el de la plurinacionalidad de los territorios.

Las mujeres indígenas somos portadoras de mensajes cósmicos que vienen anunciando lo que sucederá si no hacemos nada. Es necesario una revolución verdadera que interpele esta matriz civilizatoria enferma y con ella el poder como idea y como orden.

Kaysera Stops Pretty Places was 18 years old and a member of the Crow Nation. She disappeared in Hardin, Montana in August of 2019. Five days later, she was found deceased under suspicious circumstances. Her death was classified as “suspicious,” however, there has been no investigation into what really happened to her, or who could have done this. The people she was last known to be with were not questioned, the homeowner of the house where she was found was not questioned, not even the jogger who discovered her body was questioned. Kaysera’s own family was never approached or interviewed about her disappearance or death, and her family has had to make a tremendous effort to communicate with authorities. They have found it extremely difficult to even get anyone to speak with them about Kaysera’s case. Investigating authorities have perpetrated numerous ethical violations and continuously enabled one another in doing so.
