We need to offer ways to get support in community that do not require us to first build community. Being a known, loved, present, valued, or respected person in community should not be a prerequisite for receiving care.
I say this because people talk about building community like itβs easy, something that indicates morality, something we all have time for/can do, something that if you do a good job and do it right you will always have care and love and support within reach. Really not true.
@ people saying you donβt deserve community if you put no effort into building it - yβall will die on the hill of transactional care + labor!! Some Disabled people need constant care & we give less than we receive but we still deserve all of it. Itβs not balancing an equation.
By the way, I think building community is critical, a way of life, & is part of our necessary work as humans. My point is that under our current conditions, the labor (and love) of building community should not be required first in order to receive care outside the state.
Ex: Many folks turn to pod mapping during times of crisis to activate their pod and avoid unwanted or carceral responses. You need to know the people in your pod and be in relationship with them, be in community. AND we know that many folks have no one or 1 person in their pod.
Should the people who have no one in their pod not receive compassionate, anti-carceral care in community? Are they required to first build relationships so they can access care outside of the state? I would hope not, because so many of our most targeted and marginalized cannot.

I think that obligations we carry for collective care, even though they arenβt often acknowledged, are what will actually save us.
Unfettered personal freedom isnβt always what itβs cracked up to be.

Mark Silver writes,
Healing is sometimes complicated, needing sophisticated resources. Sometimes.
However, so much of healing is not. A great deal of healing is giving gentle, caring attention to something, without trying to fix or push or get past.
I'm convinced that gentle, caring attention, with a fierceness that doesn't allow us to be distracted, is a huge part of what we each need, and what this culture needs.
Gentle, caring, fierce attention on the inequality and injustices.
Gentle, caring, fierce attention on the toxins in our environment, and on who is putting them there.
Gentle, caring, fierce attention on the grief that we won't feel because it seems like too much.
Gentle, caring fierce attention on the anger, and rage, that rises up in our hearts daily.
Gentle, caring, fierce attention on the fear, the wracking, drowning fear that is so present in our culture.
In my experience, this kind of attention leads to profound connection, which leads to a healing and wholeness in the heart, which leads to inspired action, an expression of love that creates lasting change.
Is this everything? No. Is more needed than this, yes.
However, I believe that this, multiplied by each of us, will lift a tremendous weight and stuckness, that then makes the more difficult, more sophisticated needs more visible, and we'll have plenty of resources freed up to do that healing.
Gentle. Caring. Fierce.

' An alcoholic friend of Philip Yancey once said to him:
βWhen I'm late to church, people turn around and stare at me with frowns of disapproval. I get the clear message that I'm not as responsible as they are. When I'm late to AA, the meeting comes to a halt and everyone jumps up to hug and welcome me. They realize that my lateness may be a sign that I almost didn't make it. When I show up, it proves that my desperate need for them won out over my desperate need for alcohol."
Lets make sure that people know how welcome they always are, that our table is really big and that there is always a place with their name on it at our table. '

The northern hemisphere celebrated the 2024 summer solstice on June 20, while the southern hemisphere welcomed in its winter solstice. Since we're located in the United States, we'll focus on the summer season. We have published a fair number of podcasts and articles on the topic of sunshine that has been described a the best multivitamin. This content will explain why recommend you allow your skin and eyes to receive the benefits of the sun exposure unobstructed! Of course, we don't recommend folks burn, however instead of sunscreen, we'd recommend a wide brimmed hat, shade and clothes. We link to our archives on the topic via https://campsite.bio/westonaprice.
Here are a few facts:
β’ Research has not validated the claim that the sun is not safe because it causes melanoma.
β’ Sunscreen use actually promotes skin cancers.
β’ Sunscreen chemicals are toxic to all systems in the body and to all life on the planet.
β’ Sunshine provides many benefits for the whole body.
β’ If you block UVB radiation it can lead to low vitamin D3 levels due to the inability to produce this essential vitamin in the skin, which results in a multitude of health problems.
β’ The benefits of sun exposure are about much more than vitamin D.
We recommend you avoid both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in any form. Listen to, or read the transcription of our podcast episode 183 "Is Sunscreen Okay to Use? with Dr. Elizabeth Plourde" Beyond our archives, we link to an article by Becky Plotner with a homemade sunscreen recipe that dosen't include titanium or zinc https://campsite.bio/westonaprice. Happy solstice - whether it is the start of summer or winter for you!
