Orion Anomalies in Sydney & Prague: Servers Let Everyone Down
This weekend's Anomalies in Sydney, and even more evidently in Prague, were marred by severe server issues that lasted almost exactly as long as the event itself: starting when the Anomaly windows opened and ending the moment they closed. We, voicing the concern of POCs, Anomaly participants, and players supporting the Events remotely, want to take the unusual step of publicly calling out Niantic Spatial and holding them accountable for these issues.
What happened Saturday was very frustrating to witness for the Agents on site, and a competitive disaster which invalidates much of the work and preparations put into the strategies for the fight. Agents who spent real money on flights and hotels to compete at the main Ingress Live Events found themselves fighting the servers as much as the opposing faction, with Portals unresponsive and actions timing out. That led to the coordination and cooperation between Agents that Anomalies are known and loved for becoming useless, leaving the results to be decided by how many Players were able to have their actions registered, all while the clock ticked down on a four-hour window that can't be turned back.
Niantic acknowledged the problem on social media and Telegram, noting they were investigating, and mentioned infrastructure work from March aimed at improving performance (unclear if to name a possible culprit or to reassure Agents). That context does, however, not help Agents when the game is unplayable during the only hours that matter, and the response felt hollow as no other immediate actions followed.
Regardless of faction, every Agent on the ground deserved a fair fight. They didn't get one. Niantic Spatial owes the community a guarantee this won't repeat itself in Kure, Jersey City, Geneva, Lima, and beyond.

Niantic has published a post-mortem update regarding the server issues experienced by players during Orion Sydney and Prague.
In the update, Brian Rose pinpoints the three main causes of this scanner instability:
1) Concurrent writes in the database causing gridlock - the new database struggled under heavy simultaneous traffic, slowing the near-real-time registration of actions.
2) Ghost records pileup - The game database needs to keep track of changes in Portals, Resonators and other game objects and the way it does so causes a "ghost record" to be left behind for some time. During the events, the high number of actions caused the database to become clogged with such ghost records.
3) Slow autoscaling - The upscaling of resources is usually done preemptively before an Anomaly, to allow the servers to take the hit from the sudden rush of traffic caused by a live event. However, due to the other two issues mentioned, the automatic upscaling system could not keep up.
The Ingress team did intervene during this timeframe to force the server resources onto higher-end machines and try to handle the traffic load, and it worked to the extent of keeping the game from crashing, but didn't fix the core issues.
Brian mentioned some new works in progress to prevent this from happening in future events:
1) Move to in-memory Portal updates - allowing game action to be processed faster initially, then saved to the database.
2) Change the way the database indexes time - eliminating the ghost records bottleneck
3) Pre-split Anomaly Zones in dedicated shards - to dedicate more resources to the Live Events in advance
As a mitigation step, the Ingress team will reduce the XMP Attack range but increase their strength, to try and reduce the number of updates caused by attacks. This update will be active from May 26th @ 17:00 UTC to June 1st @ 17:00 UTC.
Talks are ongoing between Niantic and the POCs of Prague and Sydney Anomalies, about a compensation specifically for participants to these events, as well as codes for Agents who contributed to the Anomaly but weren't awarded the Orion Anomaly Badge.

The event, which will run from June 5th @ 18:00 UTC to June 22nd @ 18:00 UTC, was previously announced back on the quarterly schedule reveal, and now we know its full composition!
Two campaigns will be available, a free one and a premium one:
The free Campaign will award Agents with the Summer Solstice 2026 Badge in bronze and silver, along with up to 3,000 Orion Tokens.
The premium Campaign will cost 15,000 CMU and will grant the exclusive Dark Star 2026 Badge (rightmost in the picture).
During the event window, 10 Kinetic Capsule Programs will be able to be started simultaneously.

Update on temporary XMP tuning
A new tweak to XMP tuning will be performed starting today, May 28th @ 17:00 UTC.
The data about this tuning was not disclosed, but earlier investigations by Agents reported that the range of L8 XMP Bursters was about half of the original range.
We are curious to see what these new tweaks will look like! If you spot something new, the comments are open to discuss!

Going forward, depending on your choosen Faction during account creation, either Devra Bogdanovich (Resistance) or Hank Johnson (Enlightened) will guide you through the tutorial and give you the basics of Hacking, Attacking, Deploying and creating Links and Fields. This Tutorial is not bound to your actual location and can be completed without moving, as you will be moved automatically through the CERN facility during it to access the required Portals.
You can replay the Tutorial at any time from the Main Menu and the new "Replay Tutorial" button right under the Settings button.

At the start of the Summer Solstice and Dark Star Campaigns yesterday, numerous Agents reported encountering various issues with the Dispatch Screen, which failed to show certain Campaigns.
Niantic has identified issues which caused the Premium Nemesis Redux campaigns to end 6 hours earlier than intended, and caused the Dark Star 2026 campaign to disappear from the Dispatch screen.
While the Ingress team investigates further and works on a fix, they have extended the Dark Star and Summer Solstice Campaigns by one week, now ending on June 29th @ 18:00 UTC.
A compensation will be offered to Agents who purchased the Nemesis Redux Premium campaigns, next week.

A world first, double Onyx in the GORUCK challenges!
A historic milestone has been reached in the Ingress community!
We received reports that Agent @pirouk🔸 🇯🇵 and Agent @Himav🔸 🇮🇹 should be respectively #1 and #2 in the world to hold both the GORUCK Urban Ops and GORUCK Stealth Ops medals at the Onyx level!
The Japanese Resistance agent achieved his second Onyx in March 2026, while Himav reached it last week during the Orion Anomaly in Kure!
Reaching Onyx in just one of these medals is already a rare feat: it requires participating 20 times in some of the most physically and mentally demanding events Ingress has to offer.
While talking to both Agents about this post, their passion for this kind of events immediately came through: with this post they would like to share the huge amount of fun they have during these experiences, and how tightly knit the rucking community of Ingress is. Both Factions are ready to welcome all newcomers who would like to try these events out!

Reaching Onyx in just one of these medals is already a rare feat: it requires participating 20 times in some of the most physically and mentally demanding events Ingress has to offer.
While talking to both Agents about this post, their passion for this kind of events immediately came through: with this post they would like to share the huge amount of fun they have during these experiences, and how tightly knit the rucking community of Ingress is. Both Factions are ready to welcome all newcomers who would like to try these events out!

🇨🇳 Foshan Mission Day 2026 Recap
Agent @alexiendo kindly sent us their recap video from Mission Day Foshan, China!
Over the weekend, Agents from many cities gathered for Ingress First Saturday, the Mission Day Before Party, and a full day of missions across the city. Through 24 missions, Agents could explore what is known as a “modern thousand-year-old city”: from ancestral halls, old streets and local temples, to riverside skylines, public parks, modern landmarks and rain-washed night views.
Organizers estimate that 603 Agents joined Foshan Mission Day. By 23:59 on June 7, 123 Agents had also completed the full 24-mission challenge and made it onto the commemorative completion list.
On this fun weekend, Agents walked through the rain, exchanged BIOCARDs, collected stamps, shared faction flags, helped each other at the venue, and brought life to every corner of the event space. We also had some very special “STAFF members” on duty, who may have stolen more attention than anyone expected.
From the organizers, a huge thank you to all visiting Agents, local Agents, volunteers, photographers, staff members, and everyone who supported Foshan Mission Day 2026. This event could not have happened without your trust, patience, energy and enthusiasm.
