As most of you know, and have discussed about in our chat, the newly introduced overhaul to Ingress' rendering pipeline also introduced a small bug which caused the ornaments of the Layers functionality to be displayed over the core of portals, instead of behind them.

Alex Stamm, technical artist at Niantic, in a reply to a Resistance Agent on Twitter, stated that the bug has been found, triaged and a fix will be deployed with the next Ingress Update.

The Annual New Year Celebrations on Ingress: A Shift in Tradition

The annual celebrations for the New Year on Ingress have been met with contrasting opinions from the player base.

This year, Niantic has introduced a new twist on the final days of December with the 'Countdown to 2025' Campaign, which rewarded Agents with items after completing specific in-game bounties. However, many Agents voiced their disappointment with the new mechanics in our discussion group. The criticism wasn't primarily directed at the Campaign structure or tasks themselves, but rather at the rewards, which were considered insufficient motivation to complete the daily campaigns.

Up until 2023, Niantic traditionally published passcodes (whether hidden or visible) on their social platforms or hosted free packs on the in-game store. However, as many players have pointed out, this method was vulnerable to exploitation by players using multiple accounts to accumulate gear. In this light, the switch to Campaigns appears to be a logical step toward limiting cheating behavior.

A comparison of rewards between 2023 and 2024 clearly illustrates the scale of the reduction in rewards to players:

Notably, no rewards were distributed on the final day of the 2024 campaign, not even AP rewards.

While Niantic's shift to Campaign-based rewards represents a positive step toward combating exploitation and giving a fun challenge to Agents, the significant reduction in rewards has led to widespread disappointment within the community. This change aligns with Niantic's recent trend of reducing item rewards across various aspects of the game. Our hope is that future iterations of these holiday events or future reworks of Campaign rewards will benefit from a middle-ground approach that both prevents exploitation and provides meaningful rewards to legitimate players.

Niantic has announced that, in an upcoming update, they will drop Ingress' support for 32-bit devices. This announcement comes shortly after the same decision was taken for Pokémon Go, and enables the development team "to streamline their development process and focus resources on supporting newer operating systems and technologies."

End of support is scheduled for June 2025.

The Global Challenge for the +Alpha Anomaly Series is starting on January 18th, in about one day depending on your timezone!

Agents will be able to complete a purposely-made Campaign to earn the 2-tiered +Alpha: Operation medal!
A doubt still remains about the distribution of Series Points for this Global Challenge since the rules for this series have not been published by Niantic yet, but if we take a look at the rules from the Erased Memories Series - which concluded in Q4 2024 - 200 Season Points were distributed based on the number of bounties completed by Agents of each Faction. We can expect something similar, although the final confirmation will come only once the rules are published, which we hope will happen in the next few hours.

We will keep you updated with news on the +Alpha Series rules as soon as we know more!

Niantic has announced the rules for the +Alpha Anomaly Series!

While the rules for Anomaly Events, Skirmishes and Bounty Blitzes seem to have remained largely the same, here are the rules for the +Alpha Global Campaign, which is starting at 00:00 local time on January 18th and will conclude on February 2nd at 23:59 local time

The +Alpha Campaign: Global will be activated in the scanner. Agents will be required to complete Bounties and obtain +Alpha Op Points to gain Season Points for their Faction and obtain the +Alpha Operation Medal.

Bronze tier: Complete Assignment 1 of the Campaign
Silver tier: Complete Assignment 3 of the Campaign

+Alpha Op Points
To complete some of the bounties, +Alpha Op Points are required. Agents can score Op Points by performing the following actions:
- Destroy a Mod: 2 points
- Deploy a Common Mod: 1 point
- Deploy a Rare Mod: 4 points
- Deploy a Very Rare Mod: 16 points

Each time a mod is deployed, each existing Mod owner and the Portal owner receive points based on the rarity of the deployed Mod.
- Common: 1 point
- Rare: 2 points
- Very Rare: 5 points

Season Points
100 Season Points will be distributed to the Factions based on the number of Bounties completed by Agents
100 Season Points will be distributed based on the +Alpha Op Points obtained by Agents.
