There are many economics curves and principles that are important for the UPSC exam, as they help to understand the behavior of consumers, producers, markets, and the economy as a whole. Some of the important curves and principles are:
• Kuznets curve: This curve shows the relationship between economic growth and inequality. It is inverted U shaped, meaning that as initially economic growth leads to greater inequality, followed later by the reduction of inequality.
• Lorenz curve: This curve shows the distribution of income or wealth within an economy. It plots the cumulative percentage of income or wealth against the cumulative percentage of population. The more the curve deviates from the line of equality, the more unequal the distribution is.
• Gini coefficient: This is a numerical measure of the inequality of income or wealth distribution in an economy. It ranges from 0 to 1, where 0 means perfect equality and 1 means perfect inequality.
• Environmental Kuznets curve: This curve shows the relationship between economic progress and environmental degradation through time as an economy progresses. It is also inverted U shaped, meaning that as initially economic growth leads to more pollution, followed later by the improvement of environmental quality.
• Laffer curve: This curve shows the relationship between tax rates and tax revenues. It suggests that there is an optimal tax rate that maximizes tax revenues, and that beyond that point, increasing tax rates will reduce tax revenues due to disincentives and tax evasion.
• Phillips curve: This curve shows the trade-off between inflation and unemployment in an economy. It suggests that there is an inverse relationship between inflation and unemployment, meaning that lower inflation is associated with higher unemployment and vice versa1.
• Engel curve: This curve shows how household expenditure on a particular good or service varies with change in household income. It indicates the income elasticity of demand for that good or service.
• Rahn curve: This curve shows the relationship between government spending and GDP growth rate of an economy. It is an inverted U shaped, meaning that there is a level of government spending at which economic growth theoretically maximizes, and that beyond that point, increasing government spending will reduce economic growth due to crowding out and inefficiencies.
