Overnight, Israeli troops were ordered to withdraw from the strategic Netzarim Corridor that divides the Gaza Strip between north and south. Until now, the government has repeatedly stressed that it will never do this until Hamas is destroyed.

Control of the corridor allows the IDF to better control the different parts of the Gaza Strip. This limits Hamas’s freedom of movement and makes it more difficult for the terrorists to transfer forces, supplies, and possibly hostages.

Control of the corridor makes it possible to cut off Gaza City, which was Hamas's main power center in the north, from the center and south parts of Strip, from where all the smuggled arms and supplies enter.
