Visiting the Sick
A unique aspect of Mufti Shabbir Ahmed Sb is his people skills and concern for the welfare of Muslims - he is a true embodiment of ‘living the Sunnah’. On Sunday, when we went Leicester for a Khatm al-Bukhari ceremony, our itinerary went like this:
1. Ta’ziyah (bereavement) of a former Darul Uloom Bury student who had lost his father
2. Iyadah al-Mareed; visiting a sick Maulana who had recently fallen down
3. Iyadah al-Mareed; visiting a former Darul Uloom Bury student who had recently had a heart attack
4. Khatm al-Bukhari
5. Ta’ziyah (bereavement) of another individual who had lost a family member
6. Iyadah al-Mareed; Mufti Sahib went to see Shaykh Saleem’s mother who is unwell
7. Iyadah al-Mareed; Mufti Sahib went to see a relative of Shaykh Saleem who is unwell
What do you notice? For one ceremony, two ta’ziyahs (visiting the bereaved) and 4 iyadah al-mareed (visiting the sick). These are our scholars. Mufti Sahib joked with me, “You’re not going to want to come with me again are you?” I replied, “Rather, I learnt so much about the importance of visiting the sick and bereavement.” He said, “Look at how happy they became when I visited them, it put a smile on their face.” When I had my hernia repair three weeks ago, Mufti Sahib visited me the next day. He lives the Sunnah of ‘visiting the sick’.
It can become easy to stay hidden in our rooms and Madrasahs researching difficult masa’il, but visiting the sick and bereaved is very important and will change lives. It is something that I am also weak in.
May Allah the Almighty grant tremendous Barakah in the lives of these luminaries and allow us to live like them. Ameen.
