For the new Anesthesiology residents, I want to congratulate you on starting your ACCPM journey.
This subspecialty is one of the most rewarding paths in medicine because it lets you combine sharp procedural skills with deep critical thinking.
You will be the person called when things get serious in the ICU, managing airways, guiding resuscitation, and making decisions that truly change patient outcomes. Those early days might feel overwhelming but remember why you chose this. The ability to stay calm under pressure and support patients at their most vulnerable is what makes ACCPM special. Keep that fire alive.
The truth is this training will push you harder than you expect. Long hours, emotionally heavy cases, and moments where you question yourself are normal.
My advice is to focus on the basics first. Master your ventilator management, get comfortable leading rounds, and build strong relationships with your ICU team.
Ask questions without hesitation, document everything thoughtfully, and take care of your own health because burnout is real in this field. Learn from every cardiac arrest and every family discussion.
Progress comes from consistency, not perfection.
What keeps me going is seeing patients walk out of the hospital after we fought hard for them. You are stepping into a role where your work matters every single day. Stay curious, support your co-residents, and celebrate the small wins. The field needs dedicated people like you.
