Dr. Rahmeto Abebe, director of research programs directorate of HU, said on his part that the university changed its research strategy to focus on multidisciplinary thematic approach since 2017 and 77 research projects out of a total of 369 researches funded by the university were thematic projects some of which were executed by the College of Education. Dr. Rahmeto added that the university has been delivering numerous community services that are positively impacting the lives of our society and is planning to do more in the coming years, scholars need to make themselves ready to do more research and enhance the quality of our services.

Different thematic research papers were presented by scholars on the workshop on topics including: institutionalization of accountability mechanism, autonomy and academic freedom; early childhood care and education policy implementation analysis in Hawassa University technology villages; the impact of public higher education expansions on education quality and graduate students' employment; and Indigenous knowledge to enhance adult education. There were questions raised by participants following the presentations and the scholars reflected back on the queries. About 60 scholars from the college of education, other academic staff members and PhD students were in attendance at the workshop.
Hawassa University, Infolink University College, organize a Joint Training Workshop and Seminar

Hawassa University and Infolink University College have jointly organized a one-day-and-half interactive training on grant proposal writing, and a half-day seminar on e-services implementation and cybersecurity, on March 24 - 25, 2023, at South Star International Hotel, Hawassa.

Institute of Technology, Hawassa University, has been working on a collaborative project entitled NURTURE, a multi-institutional collaboration for institutional capacity building at higher education institutions in Ethiopia (2021-26) sponsored by NORAD, and Infolink University College has been developing e-services implementation framework for higher learning institutions as part of a PhD dissertation. The two HEIs jointly organized the workshop and seminar with the mutual intent of creating a platform for knowledge sharing, capacity building and validation of the framework on progress.
Dr. Gebrechristos Nurye, Deputy Director of Research and Technology Transfer of IoT, HU, officially opened the workshop and he underscored the need for such collaborations to enhance technology and public services in Ethiopia.

The training on grant proposal writing was delivered by Dr. Shegaw Anagaw, an Associate Professor of Information Systems, at the Business School of University of South-Eastern Norway whereas the seminar on e-services implementation and cybersecurity framework was meant to get a validation for using it in higher learning institutions developed as part of a PhD dissertation research.

In addition, two more cybersecurity focused proposals were presented and commented by Dr. Seble Hailu, Deputy Director for cyber security Research at INSA and other participants of the seminar. A total of 40 faculty members from Institute of Technology, College of Education, and Infolink University College participated in the events.

Finally, Dr. Eng. Fasika Bete, Scientific Director of IOT, HU, gave a closing remark where he expressed his gratitude for all stakeholders for taking the initiative of organizing such a platform. He also remarked the strong commitment on the part of HU in general and IoT in particular to extensively work on bringing relevant international and national partners for the betterment of institutional capacity building and more. The two days long event was successfully concluded with a certification of participants.

College of Law and Governance organizes the 3rd National Research Conference

College of Law and Governance, Hawassa University, has organized the third National Research Conference with a theme "Peace, Governance, Justice and Development in Transforming Ethiopia" at the AU Hall, Main Campus.

Dr. Debrework Debebe, Dean of the college, said in his welcoming speech that peace, good governance and justice are the most important pillars of democracy that any nation demands in order to create stable community with sustainable socioeconomic development. He mentioned the fact that Ethiopia is recently suffering from various conflict-related experiences that are caused by various embedded factors which require careful research-based investigations in order to make fair remedial interventions. Dr. Debrework added that the research papers to be presented at this conference are believed to have their own
scientific contributions for the academia as well as for policy makers and practitioners within Ethiopian context.

Dr. Ayano Berasso, President of HU, in his opening speech emphasized that peace, justice and good governance are among the crucial democratic components that are required for sustainable development of the country. Hence, he said that promoting peace and inclusive societies, providing access to justice for all, and building strong, effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels are quite important to ensure sustainable development. The president added that strengthening the rule of law, human rights protection and good governance are essential to create stable and peaceful society and all stakeholders including the government, civic societies, academic and research institutions, and the community at large need to work jointly to find long lasting solutions to prevailing conflicts in the country.

Honorable Dr. Demeke Achiso, member of the House of Representatives and academician at AAU, was the keynote speaker at the conference. Dr. Demeke stated that participants of the conference need to properly investigate the interplay of local, national, regional and global geopolitical contexts and come up with alternative policy advises on how to manage the ever-growing security complex in the region and research outcomes of this conference also are expected to promote harmony between peoples and nations and foster prosperity in a sustainable manner. He remarked that nothing else is more pressing and urgent than genuinely asking ourselves why inter-ethnic, religious and other sorts of tensions, wars and conflicts in Ethiopia are simmering now than ever. He called for participants of the conference to engage in constructive key debates in the overlapping areas of conflict resolution, peace building, political communication, security, governance, history, and processes of ensuring economic and political development beyond borders.

A total of15 research papers were presented by researchers from different universities and research institutions in the country.
WFP Deputy Country Director visits Hawassa University

Deputy Country Director of WFP in Ethiopia, Ms. Jennifer Bitonde, has visited Hawassa University to discuss potential collaboration areas of mutual interest.

Dr. Tafesse Matewos, Vice president for research and technology transfer of HU, received the delegates of WFP and presented a preview of research and technology transfer activities in HU. In his presentation, Dr. Tafesse indicated that the university has been engaged in major priority areas such as health, agriculture, science and technology as well as humanities and education. He has highlighted major collaborative projects relevant to WFP such as: environmental protection and mitigation of land degradation; food security and climate change mitigation; Apiculture (focusing on beehive and honey production technology); Food and agriculture related project (virus free sweet potato production and distribution); Integrated
aquaculture on fishery, poultry and vegetables; poultry production and dissemination to unemployed youth and farmers in Sidama region; socioeconomic and environmental impacts of food technology; Triticale wheat variety to enhance food security and control soil acidity; gluten free organic starch production technology; soya bean value chain and use in food security enhancement; and vermicompost production as a substitute for non organic fertilizers, among others.

The vice President explained that most of those projects address small holder farmers in the university's catchment areas where Community services directorate takes care of reaching out to the farmers in most cases, but the academic staff and researchers are also going out to serve the community through their collaborative projects and innovations. He added that business and technology incubation centers at the university are being critical resources for the university's graduates to their innovative ideas into practice.

Ms. Jennifer Bitonde also pointed out that working with small holder farmers in all these projects are the most important interest areas of WFP Saving lives, Changing lives projects. She said that they give opportunities to university students to do their internship before their graduation in their undergraduate programs especially from agricultural backgrounds so that they get actual exposure real work experiences they need afterwards.

Ms. Bitonde added tgat WFP has a long history of working with NGOs and other actors, but the fact that Hawassa university is working on very interesting areas of enhancing food security and sustainable development, they would like to forge partnership to strengthen the efforts already started and link them with sustainability of the interventions addressing crosscutting issues such as geneder and food culture.

After elaborate discussion among the visiting officers from WFP and officials and researchers from HU, Ms. Bitonde concluded that they're very excited to know that the ground is quite firtile for collaboration to enhance the livelihoods of the community and contribute to supporting people in need. They have later on visited different sites in HU supporting the discussions in practice.
